Wendy Crewson joins Terrence Howard and Jennifer Hudson in Winnie

The upcoming biopic of Winnie Mandela gained a veteran actress with the addition of Wendy Crewson.  Crewson has starred in several movies, including THE SANTA CLAUSE, AWAY FROM HER and AIR FORCE ONE.  The movie, entitled WINNIE, already stars Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela and Jennifer Hudson as the titular Winnie Mandela.  Crewson will play activist Mary Brotha, who befriends the political couple after witnessing South African police brutally beat a boy.  When she joins the movement, she becomes the target of police harassment.

I still can’t say I’m completely sold on this project, only because I don’t picture Terrence Howard as Nelson Mandela and have an even tougher time imagining Jennifer Hudson as Winnie.  Maybe director Darrell Roodt can make it work, but he has his work cut out for him.

Terrence Howard will star alongside Jennifer Hudson in the upcoming film WINNIE.  As stated in a previous story, WINNIE is about the former wife of Nelson Mandela and the trials she had to face while being married to the public figure. Her life was full of obstacles as well, including, being jailed for campaigning for her husband’s release, fighting against apartheid and a conviction of fraud. The film will be directed by Darrell Roodt and has an initial budget of $15 million dollars and will begin filming at the end of this month in South Africa.

If done well, this historical drama may be a serious contender during the Academy Award season and we may see Ms. Hudson with another gold statuette.

Jennifer Hudson will star in the upcoming film WINNIE, a story about the former wife of first South African president Nelson Mandela.  The film will start shooting in May of 2010 in South Africa.  The events and story surrounding Winnie Mandela are as interesting as those that surround her former husband, including jail time for campaigning against apartheid as well as conviction of fraud.  If Ms. Hudson can pull a film like this off we may see another gold statue in her future.
