Amy Adams and Viggo Mortensen join Kristen Stewart in On The Road

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I feel like I’ve been reading about Kristen Stewart starring in ON THE ROAD for so long that I just assumed filming was underway and the cast had been set.  It wasn’t until today that I realized the main role hadn’t been cast yet.  But all of that has changed now that Viggo Mortensen has signed on to star as Old Bull Lee and Amy Adams will star as Jane, his junkie wife and mother of his two kids.  They join a cast that already includes Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Sam Riley and Garrett Hedlund.  Walter Salles will be directing the film, marking his return to the Jack Kerouac stories after directing THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES.

Jack Kerouac is an acquired taste, but it seems like everyone in Hollywood is always trying to make one of his stories or novels into a feature film.  ON THE ROAD has been a project for Francis Ford Coppola for years and it looks like he’ll finally be able to be a part of the film’s adaptation as a producer.

Kirsten Dunst joins Kristen Stewart On the Road

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Posted by: Nathan Swank

Kirsten Dunst is joining the already mostly assembled team in ON THE ROAD. The film is based on Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel, chronicling him and his friend, Neal Cassady traveling the North American Continent. The two “walk the earth” gaining self-knowledge and experience.

Francis Ford Coppola and Walter Salles, who is also directing, acquired the rights more than 30 years ago. The rest of the cast includes, Kristen Stewart (THE TWILIGHT SAGA), Garrett Hedlund (TRON LEGACY), and Sam Riley (CONTROL) and begins shooting in August. It should be no surprise that the creative team behind the beautiful and touching MOTORCYCLE DIARIES will be reuniting for another “leave your possessions behind and travel the world” film.

Sony Rebooting the Spider-Man franchise, say goodbye to Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I’m a little devastated about this news.  I’m not completely upset that Sony is getting a new director, but I’m really angry that they’re starting over.  It’s too soon and I think there’s still stories that need to be told before we start rebooting the whole thing.  And get the kid out of high-school.  But Sony announced today that SPIDER-MAN 4 is, in fact, not going to happen.  Instead, they’re going to reboot the entire franchise without Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.  According to Sony, they’re returning to Peter Parker’s roots and following him as he deals with teenage issues and superhero powers.  Sony is aiming for a summer, 2012 release date but no stars or directors are currently being mentioned for the film.

I was probably in the minority, but I really thought Sam Raimi was going to hit a huge home run with SPIDER-MAN 4.  At the very least, they could have kept with SPIDER-MAN 4 and just re-cast everything like WB did with the Batman franchise.  I think this is bad news for everyone and a severe blow to one of the most beloved superheroes of all time.

Driver’s EDitorial #08: Bring on Spidey 4!

by: Brad Sturdivant

Our Driver’s EDitorial is a weekly column designed to express our opinion on something going on in Hollywood today. Sometimes we whine and complain about something we wish was different, other times we heap praise on the system for getting it right.

There’s a lot of negative buzz going around the web world regarding Sam Raimi’s upcoming SPIDER-MAN 4. I’ve read everything from “Raimi doesn’t have it anymore” to “Spider-man 3 killed the franchise”. It’s ridiculous how fair-weather fanboys are. If a couple of snobbish critics dislike a film, the fanboys jump on it and the next thing you know, SPIDER-MAN 3 is the worst movie ever made. That’s insane, as is the notion that Sam Raimi destroyed the franchise or that he can’t make another great Spider-man film.

Spidey 2

First, let’s get something out of the way; SPIDER-MAN 3 was not a bad film. Yes, it had its problems, but overall, it was a fun film. It was a good summer blockbuster and it still has the best action scenes in all of the Spidey films. I loved the opening fight between Peter and the New Goblin. It also had more action than the other films and was void of any slow spots that the other two suffered from. Despite its problems, SPIDER-MAN 3 was fun and far from the abomination that people are trying to make it out to be. If you buy into the hype that the studio forced Raimi to do some of the things he did, then you should have no fears about the fourth film.

Spider-Man 3

Raimi just needs to make the film he wants to make. He needs to ignore everyone around him (ie: the studio) that want him to make a movie to sell action figures and not a truly great film. He also needs to avoid trying to make a better film than the DARK KNIGHT. There’s no competition between the two franchises because both of them are different, with different tones and goals. Getting into a mindset where you have to beat something that you’re not competing with could mean disaster for an artist. Aside from Superman, Spider-man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. There are plenty of great stories to be told and all Raimi has to do is tell a great story, like he has done so many times in the past.

SPIDER-MAN 3

However, in telling the story, he needs to do something with Peter’s love interest. Early reports have Kirsten Dunst reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson and if there’s one area of the Spider-man franchise that really needs some work, it’s with her character. Bryce Dallas Howard was only in the third film for a little while, but I found her ten times more appealing than Dunst. If Raimi has to come to one glowing realization, it’s that Dunst is a huge negative for any film she’s in. I’d like to see the Gwen Stacy angle explored some more and maybe boot out Dunst.

Spidey 1

I know all the hype lately has surrounded the DARK KNIGHT, and that’s fine. But let’s not forget about our friendly neighborhood Spider-man. With a returning cast and a director that feels like he has something to prove, Spidey 4 should be a blast.

Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst to star in Upside Down

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst have agreed to star in the upcoming film UPSIDE DOWN.  The film will be directed by newcomer Juan Diego Solanas, who also wrote the script.

The film is a science fiction based love story involving different worlds and alternate realities.  The title is derived from the idea that the different worlds have different perceptions of what is up and what is down.  Sturgess and Dunst will play lovers that have to find a way to be together, even if their “worlds” aren’t compatible.

It’s slim pickin’s out there for good science fiction movies and I’m not sure casting Kirsten Dunst is the best way to go to break the trend, but with a visionary director, this one might be decent.
