Kristen Bell is determined to show off all of her performance skills, with her singing and dancing being showcased in BURLESQUE and now her ballet skills being put to the test in the upcoming comedy DANCE OF THE MIRLITONS. Well, maybe not her ballet skills, as I don’t think she’ll actually be dancing in the film, but she’ll at least need to bust out her comedy skills…again. The actress is set to play an overbearing mother to a precocious 10-year old little girl determined to be a ballet star. The slightly overweight girl falls into a tense environment where she has to prove herself to her peers. Evan Greenberg wrote the script and is directing.
The script has a very LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE feel to it and supposedly, this script has been around for a while (Greenberg wrote the story while he was in middle school). They say they want to cast an unknown in the lead role, but it will be interesting to see who they choose to star as Bell’s daughter.

Today must be “movies that save sea life” day, given this is the second update on a movie dealing with saving sea creatures. This time, whales are the focus in the upcoming film, EVERYBODY LOVES WHALES. Tim Blake Nelson is joining the cast of the film as a wildlife expert working in the wildlife management office. The film is a romantic comedy of sorts following a small-town reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer that fall in love while trying to save three gray whales that get trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle. John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore will play the couple while Kristen Bell will play an LA reporter.
Ken Kwapis will be directing the film and since this film is based off true events, he has several different paths he can take on deciding what story to tell. He can focus on the love story, the whales or the politics that erupted between the US and Russia over saving the whales. Of course, he could also go after the media, who supposedly made a bigger deal out of this than it really was. The book the film is based on was written by Tom Rose and is called ‘Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event’.

The first trailer for the highly anticipated BURLESQUE is here, featuring the much hyped screen debut of Christina Aguilera. And although many of the stars in this film have a very passionate fan base, I have to point out something about this film; it looks almost exactly like SHOWGIRLS. So much so, that I found myself snickering at it. It has an eerily similar storyline of a small town girl heading to the big city to be a dancer, where she works in a club, then gets her big break an becomes famous in that city. But that’s a generalized plot. What makes it bad is that they duplicated a lot of the little things like having her mimic the dancers while in the audience and fall for the waiter/bartender guy. The acting also looks awkward, like no one really knows what to say.
I don’t know, maybe I’m being too hard on it. Check it out and decide for yourself. The film stars Christina Aguilera, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Alan Cumming, Eric Dane, Julianne Hough and Cher. Steven Antin is directing for a November 24th release date. Watch the trailer here.

We’ve been reporting news on BURLESQUE for a while now, but we haven’t see anything from it until today. Now we get four production stills from the film and it looks like a fun musical. It has an incredible cast that includes Cher, Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Kristen Bell and Stanley Tucci with Steven Antin directing. The story is about a small town girl that leaves her troubled future for the bright lights of Los Angeles, only to get hired on as a waitress in a Burlesque club. But after setting her sights on performing on that stage, she encounters a jealous rival (Bell), a smart stage manager (Tucci) and a suave entrepreneur (Dane).
This is a big movie for a lot of reasons, but most notably it features Cher’s return to the acting spotlight and Aguilera’s first attempt to act. BURLESQUE is set to hit theaters on November 24th.

I know Kristen Bell is a very talented actress, dancer, singer and all around great person and I know fanboys around the world love her, but I just don’t get it. Granted, I haven’t seen ‘Veronica Mars’ yet, but everything I’ve seen her in so far has been a letdown. Maybe I’m stuck watching drivel like WHEN IN ROME, but I find Bell to be a little annoying in the roles she takes, even with her turn in ‘Heroes’. She’s joining the cast of the upcoming WHALES with John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore where she will play a reporter from Los Angeles who “believes that her looks are her best asset”. In other words, Bell will be playing yet another annoying character.
Whales is about the rescue of three gray whales that get trapped under the ice of the arctic circle. The film is based off the book ‘Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event’ by Tom Rose. Ken Kwapis will be directing.

The official tagline for WHEN IN ROME is, “All is fair in love and Rome”, and well it’s not. In fact, there are a lot of things that aren’t fair about this movie. The good thing is that I had no expectations when I went into this so I wasn’t horribly disappointed. Sadly, it performs under the standard of a usual rom-com. The only save is a few funnies here and there, Kristen Bell, and the fact that Anjelica Huston found it worthy enough to take a small part.

Our story is centered on the young and talented art curator, Beth (Kristen Bell). When her little sister shows up on her doorstep to tell her she’s marrying a man she has only known for two weeks, Beth’s skepticism immediately kicks in. Reluctant of the odds they’ll stay together, she heads off to Rome to be in her baby sister’s wedding.
When she arrives, Beth is consumed with work. Rome doesn’t seem to provide or aid in any hope that true love will be found. During the reception she embarrasses herself until the best man, Nick (Josh Duhamel) saves her from furthering her humiliation. The two immediately hit it off and when Beth goes to make a grand romantic gesture, she sees Nick kissing another woman. In turn, Beth gets drunk and curses the Fontana de Amore (Fountain of Love). The fountain holds the coins of people who believe that it will bring them true love one day. Beth saves five suitors by plucking their coins out of the fountain.

When she gets back home, the coins have caused her a bit of pain. The five men (Will Arnett, Jon Heder, Danny Devito, Dax Shepard, and Duhamel) attached to those coins are desperately in love with her. This love borders on obsession when the guys start to effect her personal and work life. Beth must find a way to get the guys off her back, but find what real love is in the process.
When I said this movie wasn’t fair, I meant it. It’s not fair that Kristen Bell’s talents aren’t used to their fullest potential. For any of you who have seen the girl in REEFER MADNESS, you know there’s potential there. I never got into Veronica Mars, but there was a reason the show had a huge following. Bell also has great chemistry with Duhamel throughout the film. To be honest with you, Duhamel never came across as an actor that stood out amongst the others. In this film though, he came across a slightly charming.

When you get down to it, the actors aren’t the problem. The cast would lead you to believe that this movie is going to be something entertaining. However, mediocre dialogue screws it up. Most of the funny bits are due to more physical comedy and the personas that the male suitors take on are just terrible. Out of Devito, Shepard, Heder, and Arnett you think one of them will be remotely funny—this never happens. If they were given opportunity to improvise more there might have been more to laugh at, but their performances are all phoned in. Not even two of my favorite female oddballs, Kristen Schaal and Kate Micucci could make me feel any better about the crap script.
As for the romantic aspect of it since this is a romantic comedy, it never really does anything for me. There were moments where Bell and Duhamel had me then I got lost in the sea of terrible dialogue again. It also didn’t help that the soundtrack was off the charms annoying. I don’t even think that a Justin Bieber fan would be into these songs. The only one that caught my ear was a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love”.

Overall the movie was just one of those brain off popcorn chick flicks. I think that the director, Mark Stephen Johnson was a bit rusty when it came to doing a lighthearted film again. His first film, SIMON BIRCH was a wonderful tearjerker, but this movie had no hold on my emotions. In my humble opinion, it all came down to a lackluster script. What boggles my mind even more is the fact that there were two writers involved in the screenplay, David Diamond & David Weissman. Why didn’t one of them just say, “Hey, this isn’t so great”. Instead they offered to hand us a film that doesn’t even do justice to the actors and actresses involved. Instead of falling in love, I think this one scared me away from it. Maybe one day I’ll watch it again, but I wouldn’t count on it.
BLU-RAY REVIEW
Video: Great quality. The colors were bold, certainly not a bad thing. No complaints here. (2.35:1 Widescreen).
Audio: Everything was as clear as a bell on this one. No pun intended. The music offers some cheesy chick flick stuff that you would expect. Personally, not my cup of tea. (5.1 DTS-HD).
Alternate Opening & Ending (7:00) There is a reason that these are the alternates. This is not a great start to the bonus features.
Crazy Casanovas: Mischief from the Set (12:00): This is the only part I really was interested in. Mostly just to see Kristen Bell being adorable. You’ll get some background on the film, cast, and crew on this feature.

Extended Pain With the Suitors (2:00): The suitors act as their own exhibits. Didn’t really do anything for me.
Kerplunk!: Bloopers from Rome (3:00): Bloopers are usually supposed to be funny…these aren’t. Sort of a disappointment.
Deleted Scenes (7:00): A collection of deleted scenes that obviously should not have been used in the film.
Music Videos: “Starstrukk” by 3OH!3 featuring Katy Perry & “Stupid Love Letter” by Friday Night Boys (7:00): Unless you are a die-hard Katy Perry lover, or enjoy the torturous sounds of today’s excuse for what passes as music then I’d suggest skipping this entirely.
“Craziest Thing You’ve Ever Done for Love?” (0:56): Little easter egg that’s right under the last bonus feature. They just asked a few members of the cast that question. It’s cute, but could have done without it.

The upcoming PG comedy YOU AGAIN has quite a cast that includes fan favorite Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver, Odette Yustman, Betty White, Kristin Chenoweth and Victor Garber. It has a very “Disney” feel to it in that it’s only a half step away from being incredibly raunchy, but instead it’s overly safe. The story is about a former high school loser (Bell) that travels home for her brother’s wedding, only to find out that he’s marrying her high school nemesis (Yustman). To make matters worse, her mom (Curtis) has a rivalry with the fiancee’s aunt (Weaver) as well. I counted nearly a half dozen cat fights in this 2 minute trailer. Imagine what it could be if it was rated R.
Watch the trailer here.

The Walt Disney romantic comedy WHEN IN ROME starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel will be released on Blu-ray June 15, 2010. The film follows unlucky in love New Yorker Kristen Bell as she takes a trip to Rome and unthinkingly takes coins out of a fountain of love which arouses a flow of potential suitors. This Blu-ray marks a change for Disney as it will be one of their releases that does not include a DVD or a digital copy of the film. Look for a short list of special features that include:
- Deleted scenes (some BD-exclusive)
- Extended scenes (BD-exclusive)
- Crazy Casanovas: Mischief from the Set (BD-exclusive)
- Blooper reel
- Alternate Opening & Ending (BD-exclusive)
- Music videos:

McSteamy himself, Eric Dane, is going to be starring alongside Christina Aguilera and Kristen Bell in the big budget musical, BURLESQUE. Dane will be playing a high-powered businessman that wants to buy the club and win Aguilera’s heart. Along with Aguilera and Bell, the film also stars Stanley Tucci and Cher.
It’s no secret that I can’t stand ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, but I actually don’t mind Eric Dane. He has absolutely nothing to work with on that show, but overall he seems like a charming enough actor. This role seems like more of the same for him, but I wonder if they’re going to let him belt out a song or two.

Veronica Mars alum Kristen Bell will be playing Christina Aguilera’s rival in the upcoming film BURLESQUE. In it, Aguilera is a small town girl trying to find success in an LA burlesque club. The movie also stars Cher as a nightclub owner and Stanley Tucci as Aguilera’s mentor.
This is an interesting choice because Aguilera is a great singer/dancer, but an unproven actress while Bell is a great actress but an unproven singer/dancer. I’m interested to see how they work together onscreen. Bell is one of the better young starlets out there even though I’m not a big fan of her Heroes character. So let’s hope she can keep the whining down to a minimum.
