Charlie’s Angels (Blu-ray)

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Throw together three attractive women, crazy stunts, awesome music and an extraordinary amount of slow motion shots and you have the 2000 film CHARLIE’S ANGELS, directed by McG and based on the 1970’s show of the same name.  Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu are Natalie, Dylan and Alex, the crime-fighting, world-saving trio who work for Charlie, a multi-millionaire who communicates his missions via voice box.  These women alone are the only ones who can stop the mastermind, played by Sam Rockwell, as he plots to take over the world’s right to privacy with his high-tech computer voice identification program.

CHARLIE’S ANGELS was one of those films that is fun, colorful, has lots of action and surprisingly enough, holds up pretty well ten years later.  Sure, it’s full of some over-acting and cheesiness, but overall it’s still a good time.  I think a lot of this is due to Bill Murray who plays the charming and oblivious Bosley (which may be a reason the sequel was unbearable) as well as the fabulous performance from Sam Rockwell. Oh, and let’s not forget Crispin Glover as the cool Thin Man.  He really is a great bad guy who should be doing more in Hollywood.

Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in Charlie's Angels

One of the best things about this film is the obvious campiness which is done so well.  In many places it went over the top and held nothing back which was a risk but they managed to pull it off.  The actresses and actors don’t really take themselves seriously and you can tell they had a good time filming this movie.  CHARLIE’S ANGELS could have easily been a complete bust if it would have been cast differently, but this ensemble pulled it off with little effort.  We even get some nice smaller performances from: Luke Wilson, Matt LeBlanc and Tim Curry.

However, admittedly, this film does have some flaws.  Although, the punning throughout the film is fun at first, it does get really old after a while, as does some of the dialogue.  This film really leaves nothing to the imagination and spells everything out to you through dialogue and voice overs.  If you can get past this then you’re almost home free.  The other thing that will really hold you back is if you have an aversion to any of these actresses, and if that’s the case then I would go ahead and skip this film altogether.  There is no shortage of these three ladies and their parts are equally split throughout the film.  Oh, and the wire work was a bit over the top as well, but that’s not a big deal now like it was in 2000 when that was in all the movies for those few years.

Overall, CHARLIE’S ANGELS is a pleasing combination of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and SPICE WORLD, as in cool spy stuff and action mixed in with a lot of girl power.  Even though it definitely has its flaws, it’s still a fun flick to throw in on a Friday night with a bowl of popcorn.  Plus the music is great-I mean really, how can anyone hate a film that can throw in some Prodigy as well as Sir Mix-a-lot and still make it work?

BLU-RAY REVIEW

Video:McG lays on the style pretty heavy and it comes through beautifully in this Blu-ray.  This really is a great transfer.

Audio: The audio is just as impressive with surround channels being put to the test, especially during the action scenes.

Commentary with Director McG and Cinematographer Russell Carpenter: These guys really keep the ball rolling and actually give us some good technical stuff to absorb. Cinematographer commentaries are usually interesting and this is no exception.  There are some really good insights so this is really worth a watch.

Deleted Scenes (4:42): These didn’t add anything to the overall plot, however, we did get to see some more interaction between Curry and Murray which wasn’t necessary but still fun to watch.  We also get some other various scenes that were rightfully cut.

Outtakes and Bloopers (2:39): These were very similar to the ending credits and gave very little more, too many movie clips and not enough bloopers.  They really shouldn’t have added this.

Getting G’d Up (6:32): This was a short featurette of McG directing various scenes and then the cast and crew telling us how awesome he was to work with and how much they loved working with him.  He seemed to have a great energy on the set, which may have been fun if you were there but looks exhausting and annoying from our perspective.

The Master and the Angels (7:25): Cheung-Yan Yuen is the master of the martial arts in the films and this is a featurette about him and his work on the film. This includes a lot of behind the scenes stuff which is always fun to watch, and of course the obligatory training montage.

Welcome to Angel World (4:48): This was about the over the top world they built for the Angels. It’s almost a comical world and very scene specific, this was actually interesting to watch.

Angelic Attire: Dressing Cameron Drew and Lucy (3:25): Obviously, this is about the wardrobes in the film, there were some cool costumes and this was short enough that it was an enjoyable.

Angelic Effects (6:45):This is about the special effects in the film, now obviously this is dated but it’s actually kinda cool to watch just to see how far technology in film really has come.

Wired Angels (2:35): All about the wire work, which like I said before I remembered as being a bit cheesy but wasn’t as bad now as it was back then.  This is a raw scene of the fight between the Angels and Thin Man in the alley.

Tom Hardy joins Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine in This Means War

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

With all the talk of how great INCEPTION is, I feel most of the actors involved have gotten their fair share of credit, with the exception of Tom Hardy, who gave a great and underrated performance as Eames.  Not that this is some grand proclamation, but I think it’s easy to say that Tom Hardy is going to be around for a while.  his next big role is going to be in the epic McG romantic comedy THIS MEANS WAR.  In a role originally thought to go to Sam Worthington, Hardy will star alongside Chris Pine as two best friends that fall for the same girl (Reese Witherspoon) and their ensuing battles for her threaten to destroy New York City.

I like the high concept of doing something different with a romantic comedy and McG has grown up a lot since his CHARLIE’S ANGELS days, but I’m not sure I see Hardy and Pine working well together.  I see it more than I see Worthington and Pine, but as much as I like Hardy, I think the role needs someone a little more likable.  Otherwise the audience will automatically gravitate towards Pine.  But we’ll see how the finished product turns out.

Elizabeth Banks to star as Tinker Bell in Tink

I guess it was only a matter of time that Disney would make a live-action Tinker Bell movie. Over the past several years, they’ve turned the bit character from PETER PAN into an iconic figure. Elizabeth Banks will be playing the mischievous fairy in the adaptation, which is being produced by Adam Shankman and McG. No word of exactly what they’re going to do with her or whether or not Peter Pan will play a part.

I really don’t understand the fascination with Tinker Bell. But every time I’m at the Disney Marketplace in Orlando, I see dozens of girls wearing Tinker Bell shirts and the place is covered in Tinker Bell memorabilia. What bugs me about it is that Tinker Bell was not a good or nice character in the film. She was spoiled, manipulative, pouty and obnoxious. I’m just don’t understand why people like her so much.

Chris Pine set to join Reese Witherspoon in McG’s This Means War

I figured after STAR TREK, Chris Pine would be lining up the roles, but he’s actually been relatively quiet.  But now he’s signing on for the romantic comedy THIS MEANS WAR.  In it, Pine will play one of two best friends that fall in love with the same woman.  Their ensuing conflict escalates into epic battles and eventually to the destruction of New York City.  Reese Witherspoon will play the object of their affection.  So now that one half of the best friend duo is set, I’m curious to see who they’ll get to star opposite Chris Pine.

McG will be directing this and it actually sounds like it could be decent.  It’s definitely a different take on the standard romantic comedy fare and with McG involved, you know he’s going to blow a lot of stuff up.

Amanda Seyfried and McG to tackle Esther Reed’s life story

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Amanda Seyfried is everywhere these days.  We just learned she’d be doing a small part in ALBERT NOBBS and now she’s signed on to star in THE GIRL WHO CONNED THE IVY LEAGUE, which will be directed by McG.  The film tells the incredible true story of Esther Reed who made her way across America and into Ivy League schools while stealing the identity of various missing women.

I will take a minute here and bring your attention to the Rolling Stone article the film is based on.  The article is written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely and it’s a fascinating story, not to mention extremely well written.  It’s several pages long, so be forewarned, but it’s definitely well worth the time.  We’ve heard counterfeiting and identity theft stories before, but this is one of the most elaborate stories I’ve heard that actually takes place in the digital age.  The fact that she was able to get away with this for as long as she did is incredible.  This should make for a great film if McG can make it 2 hours without blowing something up.

McG enlists Bradley Cooper and Reese Witherspoon for This Means War

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

McG, he of such classics as TERMINATOR SALVATION and CHARLIE’S ANGELS, is tackling romantic comedies for his next project.  THIS MEANS WAR will star Bradley Cooper and Reese Witherspoon.  Of course, McG doesn’t do stories or plots, so somehow this romantic comedy will end up in total destruction.  And that’s not just a joke, the basic premise of the film is that two best friends fall in love with the same girl (Witherspoon) and their ensuing battle for her love results in the complete destruction of New York City.

Leave it to McG to find a way to make an outrageously expensive romantic comedy.  But all joking aside, this actually sounds like a decent idea for a movie as long as the stretch from “two friends battling” to “world destruction” isn’t too unbelievable.

McG wants to make more Terminator Sequels

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Through a live chat for his upcoming Blu-ray release of TERMINATOR SALVATION, McG “announced” that he will, in fact, be making more sequels to last summer’s Terminator film.  Now, this wasn’t exactly an announcement and it was more of McG just talking and interacting with fans, but it’s the first we’ve heard of Terminator movies since the rights to the Terminator franchise went up for sale.  No one seemed to ask him how that might effect his involvement and there’s no word on whether or not McG even knows the rights are for sale.  Obviously, the new owners might see the light not want McG to be involved.

Terminator 1

Terminator Salvation

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

In 2018, after Skynet has nearly destroyed humanity, John Connor (Christian Bale) must lead what is left of a human resistance to stop the machines before they terminate all of man kind.

Terminator 3

Anton Yelchin is pulling double duty after staring in both STAR TREK and TERMINATOR SALVATION, which opened within weeks of each other this past summer. He does an okay job as a young Kyle Reese and in case you didn’t know, he becomes the stud that Michael Biehn creates of him in the original. However, the real stand out is Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, who is a man who discovers himself in this time period with his last memory being in a jail cell on death row. He is a dynamic actor who held a commanding presence on the big screen and that’s no small feat when stacked against Christian Bale. Wright is just a more interesting character than Connor is in this film. Don’t get me wrong, Bale does a fine job as Connor especially in the opening scene, but without the other films his presence seems far less relevant. Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor is absolutely wasted here. I honestly didn’t understand why she was in the film and I have to believe most of her material ended up on the cutting room floor. I think she is a fantastic actress and was totally underutilized. That goes for Common as well, who played Barnes, Connor’s number one soldier. I didn’t even notice he was in the film until after I saw his name on the credits.

Terminator 1

I’m not sure if this was the filmmakers’ intention, but the previews give away a key element that might have been a nice surprise for a character arc. However, the way the previews are set and the way the story is told it is quite obvious. I have a major problem with a specific character’s action in the film. It didn’t seem plausible in any sort of way. A character is saved by a machine that seems human, she then risks her life and everyone and the human race to rescue it. I’m fully aware that people do stupid things but that did not make sense at all. The friends and people that have kept her alive through this end time crisis are suddenly not near as important as this new half man, half machine that she has known for 24 hours.

Terminator 4

The implausibility continues when T4 takes a very Bond-like turn and we see the evil villain divulge the evil plan before he finishes off the “good guy”. This got old in the Bond films, but here it’s a little ridiculous because the evil villain is an emotionless machine. The Bond villains did it out of pride and ego, but machines lack those human traits. A machine would choose the most logical path and this proved to be another misstep in a movie filled with them.

Terminator Salvation

Where the film lacked in emotion, dialogue and story it strengthened in its action and visuals. The story wasn’t horrible because it already had blueprints made from the originals. The action was the true star of the film and that is where director McG excelled. The sound and visuals were extremely gripping. Sadly, those come in the opening scene and then again about half way through, and then are never matched again. These scenes are what made me enjoy TERMINATOR SALVATION. There is one shot at the beginning where Connor jumps into a helicopter that flies away, spins around and wrecks in what seems to be one continuous shot. It looks absolutely amazing! I actually wanted more and at that half way point I thought to myself; this movie is really working. Unfortunately, that momentum did not continue into the second half. I think the movie works on a sci-fi channel level. Maybe it should have its own series (ala Sarah Connor Chronicles) about the post apocalyptic time period, but I really hope the next big budget feature of this series gets terminated.
