Remember when Josh Hartnett was right on the brink of being an A-list superstar? The year was 2000 and the world was a simpler place back then. Hartnett was all the buzz because his mega-blockbuster, Michael Bay directed PEARL HARBOR was going to announce his arrival to the world the following summer. Then the summer of 2001 hit and PEARL HARBOR did, in fact, announce his arrival to the world. But the world didn’t react as kindly as everyone thought and Hartnett never really found a decent follow-up. He’s done some good films since then (PEARL HARBOR wasn’t that bad), but he still doesn’t seem to be able to catch on to that elite status.
So he’s going to the well again and is going to be starring in Paul McGuigan’s science fiction thriller TOMORROW from writer Michael Gould. Hartnett and McGuigan previously worked together on WICKER PARK and LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN. In the film, Hartnett will play a man traveling through time, always trying to prevent his family’s murder. Sounds a little like THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT, but we’ll see.

We just showed you set pictures of Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley out in Los Angeles while filming TRANSFORMERS 3. Today we have pics of Rosie with Tyrese Gibson, along with an action shot of Optimus Prime and a destroyed downtown Chicago. The Chicago Tribune has a ton of specific set pics, showing close-ups of the damage and carnage from what looks like an epic Transformers battle. The picture of Tyrese is from his Twitter page.
For the most part, working on film sets is dry, dry work. But every now and again you see a set as crazy as TRANSFORMERS and I have to admit, it looks like fun. Bay never holds anything back, but it looks like he’s going all out with his third and final Transformers film. The third film stars Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Ken Jeong, John Malkovich, patrick Dempsey, Frances McDormand, Alan Tudyk, John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson and Micaela Johnson.

The female lead and Megan Fox replacement for Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS 3 has finally been decided. Newcomer, Rosie Huntington-Whitely has beat out many rumored candidates for the coveted role as Shia LaBeouf’s love interest. All that’s left to hammer out is the negotiating which I suspect this hot newbie will and should say, “Yes, yes, oh please yes,” to anything that is offered.
No offense to Huntington-Whiteley but I consider this another slap to Fox’s face being replaced by someone who has zero acting experience other than Victoria Secret Fashion Shows and an episode of Britain’s Next Top Model. Clearly, Fox was not valued for her acting chops and needs to realize that she probably never will be.
This was the least scandalous picture I could find. Seriously, look her up.

As reported some hours ago, Paramount confirmed that Megan Fox will not be returning to TRANSFORMERS 3. That is pretty big news, so naturally speculation on who will be replacing Fox is also big news. Being that no other interesting news has happened this evening I’m gonna go ahead and post the most recent information.
PRINCE OF PERSIA star Gemma Arterton is the front-runner to replace Megan Fox in TRANSFORMERS 3, TheWrap has learned.
An individual close to the casting process says the actress has already had discussions with Bay about the coveted role. Other possible replacements for Fox include models Bar Rafaeli, Miranda Kerr and Brooklyn Decker.
Mind you this is just front-runner news and this information could possibly change as soon as this is posted. However, Arterton might be a good fit. She has experience in big budget films (PRINCE OF PERSIA, CLASH OF THE TITANS), is the same age as Megan Fox and is smoking hot, yet not quite hot enough to give attitude to an employer that is making her bigger than she deserves.

While out promoting JENNIFER’S BODY, Megan Fox hurled some insults at Michael Bay, calling him “Hitler-like” and saying he was difficult to work with. Michael Bay responded with a post on his site with a dig of his own and then it kind of went back and forth. But at the end of the day, everyone had thought they had moved past their differences and were full steam ahead on TRANSFORMERS 3. Heck, there were even some leaked “previz” shots of Megan Fox and Bumblebee. But it looks like all is not well as today it became official that Paramount is not picking up her option on the third Transformers film.
Many are taking this opportunity to trash Fox and to say she got what she deserved, etc. My view on Megan Fox is that she’s one of the most beautiful people on earth and therefore, we as a society put up with stuff that others would never get away with. That doesn’t make it right, but that’s the way it is. With that said, I actually enjoyed her in the Transformers movies and feel the third installment will be less with her absence. I would have at least liked to have her show up for a bit and then get killed off. So now the question is; who are they going to get to replace her?

Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Patrick Dempsey will join Shia LaBeof , Megan Fox and the rest of the cast in TRANSFORMERS 3. Director Michael Bay is keeping plot details pretty quiet on the third installment of the popular children’s toy but we do know that McDreamy will have an important role as Megan Fox’s boss.
I’m happy for Patrick Dempsey. I was a fan of his early work such as CAN’T BUY ME LOVE and LOVERBOY. While I’m not a fan of Grey’s Anatomy I do look forward to him transitioning to bigger roles in feature films again.

I can’t remember a time when an actress could do something as simple as a set of “previz” shots (visualization shots) for a movie and draw this much attention. I guess Kristen Stewart could do something like this and draw the attention of the Twi-hards, but when Megan Fox does it, everybody is interested. Today we get the first glimpse of her on the set of TRANSFORMERS 3 and in one of the pics, you can see Bumblebee. They’re simple shots, but it’s kind of cool to get such an early look at the lovely Ms. Fox and everyone’s favorite yellow Camaro.
The film is directed by Michael Bay and is set for a July 1st, 2011 release date.

As I’ve debated film with various critics over the years, I’ve found that there’s one movie, more than any other, that tends to divide people and elicit strong emotions on both sides. That movie is the 1998 summer blockbuster ARMAGEDDON. There are people that absolutely despise this film and even though I’m not one of them, I can’t say I disagree with their opinion. There’s no reason to like this movie; the plot is ridiculous, the acting is average, the directing is overly sentimental and stylized, and the list goes on. But at the end of the day, I still love this film.

Although the “plot” (I can’t say that seriously when talking about this movie) has been well debated and discussed over the years, the basic gist of it is that there’s a giant meteor heading towards earth and the only hope for survival is to send a team to drill into the center of the meteor, splitting it into two pieces and sending the pieces away from earth. That alone is absurd, but to make it worse, NASA decides to send oil drillers up into space rather than astronauts. Because why wouldn’t they?

So you may have already noticed by my high rating that I really like this film. So the pressure is on me to try and justify why. The word “fun” comes to mind, but that diminishes the film a little bit. Yes, it is fun and yes, we need mindless summer blockbusters just as much as we need historical dramas and animated kids movies. But Michael Bay managed to create characters that the audience not only can relate to, but that we genuinely care about. I rode the wave of emotions along with Harry’s crew as they achieved success and experienced loss. It was intense and although Bay has plenty of shortcomings, he should be commended for crafting the film in a manner that captivated the audience to the point they forgot how unbelievable the plot was.

In typical Michael Bay form, there’s an overly sentimental scene towards the end that features Mr. Affleck bursting out in tears and this scene is usually what people point to when trashing the film. Even Affleck’s buddy, Kevin Smith uses it to poke fun at Ben on many occasions. If you walk into a room and see this scene by itself, it will make you laugh at how bad it is. But in the context of the movie, I always find myself caught up in the moment and getting choked up along with him. There’s something about it that just really fits into the movie and even though every bone in my body is saying it’s ridiculous, I still find myself loving it.

I remember when this originally came out at theaters; I took the day off from my summer job to catch an early showing. I loved it then and I continue to love it today. I know the film has problems and a plot that makes me laugh just thinking about it, but Bay managed to tell a story with great characters and great style that made up for it.
BLU-RAY REVIEW
Video: For those that own either version on DVD, you know that ARMAGEDDON was never presented in an anamorphic widescreen video transfer. So this is the by far and away an upgrade over anything you’ve ever seen. The video is just beautiful and it was great to see that the transfer was done so well.
Audio: We’ve had decent audio transfers before, but this once again is a drastic improvement. The dialogue and the Bay-sized sound effects boomed throughout.
Aside from a music video, this disc is completely bare bones. The Blu-ray gets a “4″ because we know what they could have included on this transfer and didn’t. I don’t know if there were some licensing issues with the former Criterion release, but at least a couple of featurettes or deleted scenes would have been nice.

I know that you all have been waiting for this news (or maybe not) but Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the classic film BAD BOYS on June 1, 2010. The Michael Bay classic, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, is about two cops in Miami who are on a case involving drugs. This is exciting news as this was one of my personal favorite action flicks growing up. Sadly no news is out about the release of BAD BOYS II as of now but stay tuned for further updates. Not a lot of special features to announce on this film, but here they are:
- Documentary: Putting the Boom and Bang in the Bad Boys
- Commentary with Director Michael Bay
- BD-Live: Movie IQ
- 3 Music videos
Artwork coming soon

John Malkovich and Frances McDormand have joined the cast of TRANSFORMERS 3, which already featured the return of Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox and Josh Duhamel. Michael Bay announced the cast additions yesterday on his website. I’m not typically a fan of celebrity websites, but his is actually pretty decent. He doesn’t post often, but when he does, it’s usually good information about his projects. He also announced that Ken Jeong would be joining the cast:
“Transformers 3 has been going very well. We are going to shoot in LA, Chicago, Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Africa, Moscow, and China. On the talent front, we just locked in Frances McDormand and John Malkovich. Both amazing actors I’ve always wanted to work with. We also just got Ken Jeong, he is the super funny actor stuck in the trunk from “Hangover” and the Doctor from “Knocked Up….I also was at a Ferrari charity event this week raising money for a hospital being built by Ferrari in Haiti. I announced that night the newest Autobot to join Transformers: the Ferrari 458 Italia.”
The other bit of news in that blurb is the addition of the Ferrari 458 Italia (pictured below). I’m a little rusty on my Transformers knowledge, so I don’t know which Autobot was a Ferrari, but a Ferrari Autobot sounds cool to me. TRANSFORMERS 3 is due to hit theaters on July 1st, 2011.

D.J. Caruso, best know for directing the films EAGLE EYE, DISTURBIA and TWO FOR THE MONEY, has been signed on to direct the sci-fi film I AM NUMBER FOUR. Based on a children’s book published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, the story follows nine teenage aliens who find themselves on Earth after their home planet is destroyed. While adjusting to a new life the title character (Number Four, I presume) finds himself being tracked by the same bad guy that destroyed his planet. The screenplay is written by Al Gough and Miles Millar and will be produced by Michael Bay.
For a kids film this doesn’t sound too terrible but slightly similar to the stories of RACE TO WITCHMOUNTAIN and that television show Roswell. However, I’m sure some decent action scenes will be provided thanks to Mr. Bay’s participation.

James Cameron is considering producing the film FANTASTIC VOYAGE. The 3-D and digital technology driven film follows a scientist who will die if his five co-workers don’t help him by miniaturizing and injecting themselves into his bloodstream to ward off the disease. FANTASTIC VOYAGE will most likely be in production during the same time as the sequels to AVATAR. Look for the first in the series of AVATAR adventures on December 18, 2009.
You’ll find an article on our site that talks about putting Michael Bay in check and I think the same could be said for Mr. Cameron. Although he does make awesome films I think he may be getting a little ahead of himself with the AVATAR sequels. Although AVATAR looks like it could be a fun time I’m not convinced it will live up to the hype–I’m not on the AVATAR bandwagon yet but I’ll keep you posted if I decide to hop on.

Since Michael Bay’s BAD BOYS in 1995, I’ve noticed a very common trend amongst movie fans; they all love to trash the guy, but they all line up to see his movies. This has led me to the conclusion that even though you’ll read Michael Bay trash talking everywhere, most people have a soft spot for the guy and actually enjoy his movies, despite their problems.
And they do have problems, so don’t get me wrong. But even though one minute I’m shaking my head in embarrassment over the horrible dialogue delivered by John Turturro one minute, I’m actually getting goose bumps from excitement the next minute as Shia is telling his dad he can’t go with him in the battle. That about sums up TRANSFORMERS 2: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. It’s going to have plenty of scenes that are cringe-inducing, but more than enough fun moments that will make up for it.

The film takes place several months after the events of the first one. The Autobots are working with the government to hunt down and destroy Decepticons while Sam (Shia LaBeouf) is juggling his new relationship with Mikaela (Megan Fox) and starting college. Everything is going fine until he finds a shard from the cube and somehow it imprints images and memories into his brain that causes him to see symbols. We later learn that these symbols are actually a map to a global-destruction device that could end life on earth. So Sam and the Autobots must battle a resurrected Megatron and prevent the end of the world.
Some reviewers will have you believe the story is much more complicated than that. I’m not going to argue with them because it’s MUCH more complicated than that. But what I’ve done is made a conscious decision to not mention any plot point that doesn’t have an impact on the end of the movie, which is about 25% of the film. Yeah, there’s a human girl that’s actually a robot and it makes no sense that Sam wouldn’t be goo-goo over Mikaela, but we all know Bay gets bogged down in worthless points, so that’s what we get when we go into a Bay film.

What he does well is set up a sense of impending doom and then make everyone involved with protecting us from said doom look really, really cool doing it. Every time I see a Shia LaBeouf movie, I like him more and more. Bay couldn’t have picked a better lead actor and Shia has done so much with so little. The Transformers movies get 2 or 3 notches higher just because he’s the lead star. How great would he have been as Anakin Skywalker in the new Star Wars trilogy?
At the end of the day, if you like Michael Bay (even if you won’t admit it) and if you liked the first Transformers film, there’s no reason you won’t dig this one. The action is fierce and intense and it moves fast enough that you’re never bored. Just suspend logic and reality for 2.5 hours and accept that the point of the film is to wow you with big special effects and loud noises and you’ll get your money’s worth.
BLU-RAY REVIEW
Video: I’ve always felt that the first Transformers film is reference-quality when it comes to audio/video presentation and this one manages to equal its predecessor. The edition I watched was the special, limited edition Wal-Mart exclusive that had the “Imax” scenes that changed aspect ratios during key fight sequences. The only other film that I know of that did this was THE DARK KNIGHT. I have to admit that I really like this effect and it made the action seem more “alive” than had they kept with the normal ratio. So if you plan on buying this, I highly suggest you go to Wal-Mart to get it.
Audio: There were rumblings that the Imax version had some audio problems, but I must have lucked out because the audio was fine with my disc. The film sounded excellent with lower bass levels being used more often, along with more utilization of surround channels. Bay has become a master of using sound effects to heighten the action and intensity, which he does very well here.
Commentary with Michael Bay, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman- This commentary doesn’t shed too much extra light on the film. These guys do a good job of keeping the chatter up but they don’t say anything too exciting. There are some anecdotes which is entertaining but this is really nothing special-although we do get the story of the famous Megan Fox on the motorcycle shot-no spoilers. There was also an admittance that some stuff was left in for the kids only. If you’re a HUGE fan of the film then watch, otherwise catch some of the shorter featurettes.
The Human Factor: Exacting Revenge of the Fallen (2:14:31)-A very in-depth “making of” featurette that is, thankfully, broken down into chapters. Of course there are a lot of movie clips and interviews from cast and crew but they cover a lot of ground in here, from initial sketches to end product. This also encompasses the first movie as well. It does run a little long but overall it’s a good watch.
A day with Michael Bay: Tokyo (13:23)-We follow Mr. Bay around as he finishes the film before showing it to Tokyo. We get to see him in interviews and press junket-type settings. The interesting thing is that he’s doing all of these interviews and talking to people and the film isn’t even finished. It’s a good “real life” piece and makes Bay more endearing to the audience.

25 Years of Transformers (10:44)-A montage of images and clips of Transformers over the years with interviews telling us why Transformers has stood the test of time. This is filler for the disk since we obviously saw the movie so we know that it has stood the test of time. If you really dig the toys this would be nostalgic–otherwise I would skip it.
Nest: Transformer Data Hub-This is an interactive menu where you can view the bios of the autobots and images of how they have changed through the years. If you wanted history of a particular bot, then this is for you.
The Allspark Experiment-Another interactive game where you choose a vehicle and add options to the car, then hit it with the allspark from the film and watch it transform–kinda goofy but my autobot was cool!
Deconstructing Visual Bayhem (22:46)- Mr. Bay gives us a little intro into this featurette and then we get some commentary from some of the visual guys. This is broken down into various scenes from the film where we get to see he conceptual scene and then the conceptual/final scene. This featurette was too difficult to maneuver through but was interesting enough. Note to Blu-ray people: just because you can make us do different things to watch the featurette, it doesn’t mean you have to…easy access is nice.
Deleted/Alternate Scenes (6:01)- A lot of these scenes were of Sam’s parents and it’s good they were deleted or cut down because they didn’t add anything extra to the story. Worth the watch though.
Giant Effing Movie (24:03)- This is their alternative to a gag reel and I dug it. A montage of explosive scenes from the film along with the actors, director and crew goofing around. It ran a little longer than necessary but it was entertaining, especially since we got to see Mr. Spielberg for a bit.

Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is heading off to college, leaving his parents and his mega hot girlfriend, Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox), behind. He finds a piece of the cube from the original in his pocket which transfers important location knowledge into Sam. Meanwhile, the Decepticons resurrect Megatron and are after Sam so they can obtain this knowledge and destroy the sun? Yes, I’m asking. I’m positive someone else out there could explain this better to me than the movie did. Anytime I discuss a plot point in this review pretend a question mark follows because I’m extremely unsure.

TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN is a cluttered mess! Sure, the special effects and sound editing is top notch and quite amazing, but it’s all over the place and coming at you nonstop. So much so, that the viewer never has time to process and appreciate it. Director Michael Bay bombards the audience with sound and visuals so over stimulating that it’s hard not to tune out. Not to mention that it is nearly impossible to keep all the new Transformers straight. I know Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee are Autobots (good) and Megatron and Starscream are Decepticons (bad). As long as one of them is in a fight, I should be okay. The best scene is a fight between Optimus Prime and a few Decepticons in the woods; a far more peaceful, consistent backdrop that I was able to focus in on a cool action sequence. I don’t need a barrage of action coming at me at all times. Let’s keep our action singular. I know this is suppose to be mindless summer blockbuster fun, but the first one proved you can still be interesting while entertaining.

TF2 has too many “what the…?” moments. If I were to go through each of them, my review would be just as over bloated as the film itself. Here are a few low lights. A human who is actually a Transformer comes and goes early on in the film and is never explained. An old Transformer seems to have human aging tendencies, even using a cane. The search for this matrix is crucial to revive Transformers but throughout the film, Transformers are being revived by other means. The military crew seems to be able to hold off the Decepticons with their bullets during the last battle for what seems like the entire film, however, up until that point, bullets had no impact on Transformers.

On a positive note, I did laugh throughout the film. The jokes were juvenile and silly and I sort of shook my head in shame but nonetheless, I laughed. Shia LaBeouf in particular is very funny! Even among this absurdness he pulls it together and shows off charismatic goofiness and wit. However, three characters, who I believe were meant to be comic relief, weren’t able to make me even crack a smile. The first is Sam’s new conspiracy theorist roommate, Leo, who is there for no other reason but to be scared and scream like a girl. The second two are a pair of hipster Autobots named Skid and Mudflap who are offensive for one reason…they are not funny. Maybe I’m just the wrong age, but being that the movie is rated PG-13 I don’t think they can reach the right age.

Fear not, behind all the explosions and carnage, at the core of the film we have an unlikely love story between two teenagers. Why is bad girl turn needy Mikaela pining over dweeby Sam? That’s one of the big “mysteries”, but essentially, they are having difficulty saying “I love you.” You’ll have to wait for the final conclusion to see if it actually happens!

TRANSFORMERS 3 a go!

Reviews were mixed for TRANSFORMERS 2 and I think someone should put Michael Bay in check, but he recently announced that TF3 has started and is already scheduled for a July 1st, 2011 release.
I think we also have to pause and acknowledge the shot he took at Megan Fox in his post. She’s been making snide remarks since TF2 came out about how difficult it is to work with Bay and he’s been relatively quiet (at least for him). But it was nice to see him take his chance when he had it.

Our Driver’s EDitorial is a weekly column designed to express our opinion on something going on in Hollywood today. Sometimes we whine and complain about something we wish was different, other times we heap praise on the system for getting it right.
In the third season of the X-Files, there’s a point where someone refers to Scully as Fox’s “human credentials”. I’ve always loved that term and I’ve often referred to my wife as my own “human credentials”. She’s the one that keeps me in check and prevents me from doing or saying something that’s too bold or too stupid for the public. I was thinking about that and I realized that it would be great if Michael Bay had someone to keep him in check when he got away from himself.

Of course, this is being driven after witnessing the spectacle that was TRANSFORMERS 2. It’s not that it was a bad movie, it had some redeeming qualities, it’s just that it didn’t have to be nearly as bad as it was. I have a hard time accepting that no one involved with the making of the film didn’t think to themselves “this isn’t working, Bay needs to tone it down a notch”. I wasn’t on the set, but I’m guessing that virtually everyone felt that way, but no one was close enough to Bay to say something.

I’m also going to go out on a limb and say that scenario played out on the set of BAD BOYS 2 and maybe even THE ISLAND. Along with TF2, those movies took a decent idea and completely screwed it up with his incessant need to ignore story and blow stuff up. Look, blowing stuff up is what Bay does best and there’s no reason he should ever stop. THE ROCK, BAD BOYS, ARMAGEDDON, TRANSFORMERS, etc., are all a blast to watch. At any time, I could put any of those films in the Blu-ray player and have a good time. Yet none of them had that complex of a story, but they at least had a story. There were character arcs, structure, and a story that moved from one point to the next; couple that with Bay’s incredible action scenes and you have a good time.

But something happens to him when he gets a blank check and a loaded franchise. It’s as if he loses his storytelling ability and can’t focus on anything but the destruction of cars/houses/buildings/etc. If he had someone that he trusted to whisper in his ear that having a human girl transform into a robot and then never going back and addressing her was a complete waste of screen time, I don’t think he would have done it. I think he would’ve stepped back, looked at the screen/script and said “let’s cut this”. He can make a good film and has proven that many times over, but he needs to put his ego in check and listen to the people around him.
All of us need that from time to time. We all need someone that will point out to us when we’re doing something stupid or when one of our ideas isn’t as great as it could be. Without that person, we’ll end up like Michael Bay; incredibly successful, rich, and the object of every beautiful actress’s affection. Okay, that didn’t come out right, but hopefully you get the point.
