Every geek’s favorite actress, Natalie Portman, has signed up the road trip comedy BEST BUDS that she will star in and produce. The film, written by Jamie Denbo is about a woman that freaks out right before her wedding and decides to take a road trip with two of her best friends. It goes on to mention that marijuana is involved, but to what extent is anybody’s guess. Maybe Portman was on it when she signed up to do this.
The film sounds like a cross between CROSSROADS and THE HANGOVER and it doesn’t sound very funny. I like road trip comedies as much as the next guy, but when the person on the road trip is a woman about to get married, it kind of limits what you can do with it. But to be fair, we don’t have a very good plot description and we don’t know who else will star or who will direct.

“Creative differences” is to the split between director and actor what “irreconcilable differences” is to the split between man and wife. It’s a general term used to describe two people parting ways that covers just about everything. We’ll probably never really know why Stuart Townsend left THOR, but the official reason is “creative differences”. Some of you may remember that Townsend was originally cast as Aragorn in THE LORD OF THE RINGS, but dropped out late under the same excuse. After leaving two big projects like this, I don’t know if I trust Townsend’s creative thinking.
Townsend will be replaced in Thor by Joshua Dallas. The only movie you may have seen him in is THE DESCENT 2, but after Thor, I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of him. Thor stars Natalie Portman, Chis Hemsworth, Rene Russo, Anthony Hopkins and will be directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Adrianna Barraza is the latest to join the already star-studded cast of THOR. She will join Natalie Portman, Chis Hemsworth, Rene Russo and Anthony Hopkins in the story of the Norse god Thor. Thor (Hemsworth) is sent to Earth after restarting a war and must learn to be a real hero as evil invades the planet. Barraza is set to play one of the humans Thor encounters in his journey. Barraza is best know for her roles in BABEL and the recent DRAG ME TO HELL. Shooting for THOR begins next week.
I think everyone can agree that the cast for Kenneth Branagh’s THOR is pretty amazing, but I really, really hope the script can live up to the talents of the cast. There’s a lot of pressure on Branagh to get this right.

Rene Russo has signed on to play Frigga, wife of Odin and stepmother to Thor in the upcoming film THOR. She joins Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins in the film directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film is set to be released on May 20, 2011 and will start shooting next month.
There has been a lot of casting and news for THOR over the past few months, hopefully the film will live up to the hype.

In my short time as a military wife I remember clearly the few brief discussions I had with my husband about him deploying overseas. Although I was blessed and fortunate to never have to deal with watching a loved one go to war, I remember the subject always looming in the back of my mind. Even though we have been removed from the military for several years, I found those thoughts and feelings rushing to the foreground as I watched BROTHERS. And even though I never had to deal with it directly, I can empathize and have deep respect for those men and women who are still facing this situation even today.

In BROTHERS we meet Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and two daughters a few days before he is about to go back to Afghanistan. Before he heads out he goes to pick up his younger brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) from prison where he has been for the past few years. Several days or weeks after being in Afghanistan, Cahill’s helicopter is shot down and he is (unbeknownst to anyone) captured and held as a P.O.W. His wife gets word that he is dead and the first half of the film is her coping with the loss of her husband with the help of Sam’s brother and family. After Cahill is recovered and comes home, the film revolves around his integration back into life and his family after the traumatic experience of being captured.

The highlight of this film was the acting of Tobey Maguire. His performance was incredible from start to finish. His journey through the film: from loving father and husband to haunted and broken war veteran was so believable it was shocking. If he’s not nominated for an Academy Award it would be appalling. The other stand out performance was from the young actress, Bailee Madison, who played his daughter Isabelle. The role required a lot of emotional range from such a young actress and she pulled it off without a hitch. Look for her in future films, she’s a very talented young lady.

The one flaw of the movie would have to be the pacing. The entire time it felt like the audience was being led to a really intense moment where we would be shocked. And although there were moments that were intense, I left feeling let down as the big climax was, well, anti-climactic. The intensity and the sadness of the film never let up and then all of a sudden the film was over. A little more resolution would have been nice although we are left with the knowledge that Cahill was starting to heal from his experiences—that was about as happy an ending as Sheridan was going to give us.

The acting and plot of this film were well done, it was just a little too depressing, disturbing and unresolved for my liking. I think the subject matter is a little touchy and still fresh and raw in America’s mind, so even though it’s a good story, it needed proper resolution to draw in a proper audience.

Natalie Portman has signed on to star in and co-produce the upcoming film PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES. The book is based on the novel by the same name and was written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Jane Austen. It is the classic Austen tale with the addition of zombies. In it we will follow Elizabeth Bennet as she fights off the undead but takes a short break when Mr. Darcy rolls into town. No release date is set yet but you can see Natalie Portman in the recently released film BROTHERS.
Even though there has been a serious influx of zombie movies I have to admit that I’m very excited about this film. I love the thought of taking a classic novel and adding blood-thirsty zombies to the mix–I wonder what Ms. Austen would have thought about this?

It’s not the sexiest picture in the world, and definitely not the pic everyone wants of Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, but here’s a glimpse of Portman on the set of the upcoming Darren Aronofsky film, BLACK SWAN. In it, Portman and Kunis play rival ballet dancers, while Winona Ryder plays the veteran they want to be. The movie is billed as a thriller, but Portman is too cute to be intimidating and any movie she’s in where she plays a “bad girl” has the high risk of coming off as corny (THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL for example), but with this cast, I have high hopes. Vincent Cassel and Barbara Hershey also star.

Kat Dennings has signed on to play Darcy, a co-worker of Jane Foster, in the Marvel Studios film THOR. She joins a stellar cast that includes: Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. The film is set for release on May 11, 2011.
There have been a lot of rumors surrounding the cast of THOR, including one with Robert DeNiro and Jude Law, but it looks as though director Kenneth Branagh has made some tough decisions and hammered out the details (get it, cause Thor uses a hammer!). I for one am excited about this take on the Norse myth.

The film BLACK SWAN is very confusing to me. On one hand, I think everything Darren Aronofsky touches turns to gold and I love Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. But on the other hand, a story about rival ballet dancers with a hint of supernatural thrown in just doesn’t appeal to me. But maybe I’m scarred because every movie I’ve seen about ballet dancing has been less than enjoyable. But anyway, Winona Ryder has signed on to star in the film as another ballet dancer, presumably an older dancer that everyone wants to be.

There have been a lot of casting rumors regarding the upcoming Kenneth Branagh directed THOR, but we officially have confirmation that Anthony Hopkins has signed on to star as Thor’s father, Odin. Hopkins joins the already impressive cast that includes Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
It was rumored that Robert DeNiro and Jude Law were also joining the cast, but it has yet to be confirmed.
