Zac Efron set for The Lucky One based on the Nicholas Sparks novel

Zac Efron is the kind of star that’s made for a Nicholas Sparks adaptation.  Efron has a tendency to look like he’s about to cry, even when he’s happy.  So that overly dramatic feel will serve him well in what is presumably an overly sappy Sparks novel.  In THE LUCKY ONE, Efron will play a marine that’s searching for a mysterious woman that was in a photograph he carried with him while serving in Iraq.  I haven’t read the book, but I’m guessing there’s a tragic ending in there and things don’t work out for everyone involved.

Scott Hicks will be directing the feature and Denise Di Novi will be producing for Warner Brothers.  This will be the fourth Sparks novel she’s produced with the others being NIGHTS IN RODANTHE, A WALK TO REMEMBER and MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE.  I’m not sure I trust her judgment when it comes to Sparks’s work considering those are arguably the three weakest of all his novels.

Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston in The Last Song Trailer

It seems like we just got the trailer for Nicholas Sparks’ DEAR JOHN, now we get a trailer for his THE LAST SONG.  Audiences seem to eat up his mushy love stories, but this one looks like it’s trying too hard.  In this one, a rebellious girl has to come to terms with her parents’ divorce when her mother forces her to live with her father for a summer.  The film stars Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston.

To be clear, I have nothing against Miley Cyrus.  I think her Disney show and subsequent movies are unwatchable, but that’s not really her fault, they’re just a product of their audience.  But Miley has a unique knack for coming off very whiny every time she speaks, so I’m not sure I’m going to be able to handle her for an entire film.

Watch the trailer here.
