I’m a huge Steve Martin fan and I’ll watch anything he’s in, but he’s had a rough go lately when it comes to movies. Between the CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and PINK PANTHER movies, the guy needs a box office hit in a bad way. Hopefully, he can find it with THE BIG YEAR. He’s starring with Owen Wilson and Jack Black as three bird watchers that try and outdo each other in a bird-watching competition as they try to spot the rarest birds in North America.
At first glance, you might be thinking that a movie about bird-watching will be lame and mind-numbingly boring. But the script is based off the book ‘The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession’ by Mark Obmascik and judging by the general regard for the book, it should turn out to be a funny film. Supposedly, the bird-watching is just a metaphor for the various stages the three guys are at in their life.

When John Hughes passed away in August of 2009, many of us thought that we’d seen the last of the famous filmmaker’s work. As it turns out, we may get several more John Hughes movies after all. As the family is digging through his work, they’re finding several unpublished works, including books and screenplays. One of the scripts making its way through Hollywood studios is ‘Grisbys Go Broke’ which revolves around a wealthy family that is forced to live poor when they lose everything. It’s thought that Paramount would pick up the film since Hughes made most of his more popular films. Hughes’ last script to see a feature film was 2008’s not-so-memorable DRILLBIT TAYLOR with Owen Wilson (under the pseudonym Edmond Dantes).
Hughes received a touching tribute at last night’s Oscar show, even if it was a little scary to see all of our 80’s kids grown up. What happened to Judd Nelson? The guy is 50 years old and he’s dressed like he’s 20.

Rachel McAdams, Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard have all agreed to star in Woody Allen’s next film that will shoot in France. Unfortunately, that’s all we know. I hate posting news about Woody Allen films because there’s nothing really to report other than who’s joined the cast. He hasn’t even announced a title for the movie yet, let alone a plot summary. Finding out it’s shooting in France is actually more in-depth than what we usually know this early in the process.
And does anyone still care about Woody Allen? I thought he had made a bit of a comeback with MATCH POINT, but that success didn’t last long. WHATEVER WORKS was a letdown considering how many fans Larry David has, but his latest film YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER with Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin is generating good buzz early on and was just picked up by Sony Pictures Classics.

When ZOOLANDER first came out, I was a huge fan. I was that guy that was doing “Blue Steel” for months after the movie came out. To this day, I can pop it in the DVD player and laugh out loud several times. With that said, I’m a little surprised they’re moving forward with a sequel. It’s not that it doesn’t deserve one (because it does), I just don’t get the feeling that it still has an audience. But Ben Stiller and writer Justin Theroux (TROPIC THUNDER, IRON MAN 2) are working on a script right now that sets our favorite male model 10 years from the events of the first one as he and Hansel (Owen Wilson) are trying to make a comeback in the fashion industry.
That implies that Owen Wilson is on board, but what about Will Ferrell’s Mugatu? Stiller said that he wants Ferrell back, but Ferrell hasn’t committed one way or the other. He went on to say that the reason we haven’t seen a sequel sooner is that he didn’t know how to continue the story after the character’s creator (Drake Sather) passed away. But it looks like ZOOLANDER 2 is going to happen. Is it too late?

We haven’t seen much from Amanda Bynes lately. For a while there, she seemed to be everywhere, but never in anything that I wanted to see. Today we learn that she has joined the cast of the Farrelly brothers comedy HALL PASS. She will star alongside Owen Wilson, Jenna Fischer and Jason Sudeikis. The film is about a woman that gives her husband a pass to sleep around.
The Farrelly’s are hit or miss, but I like the idea of this film. Obviously, cheating can lead to a number of humorous events and I’m assuming the film will turn at some point where the guy is freaking out that his wife will use a pass as well. If done properly, this could be a really funny movie.

Jenna Fischer, best known for her role in “The Office”, is in negotiations to star alongside Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis in the Farrelly comedy HALL PASS. She will play Wilson’s wife in a story of a wife who gives her husband a “free pass” to engage in an affair. Filming is to begin next month in Atlanta.
As I mentioned in my previous article about HALL PASS, I find the Farrelly Brothers movies to be hit or miss, but if they keep adding decent cast members I may have to change my tune.

Owen Wilson has signed on to star in the next Farrelly Brothers’ film HALL PASS, with Jason Sudeikis in negotiations to co-star. The film will revolve around the marriages of Wilson and Sudeikis as their wives give them a ‘hall pass’ or free pass to have an affair and spice up their respective marriages. The film will be directed by Bobby Farrelly and will begin shooting in February.
The Farrelly Brothers’ films are hit or miss with me but I think adding Owen Wilson to the mix may make this movie more tolerable.

Like we mentioned a while ago, the family favorite comic strip MARMADUKE is coming to the big screen, with Owen Wilson voicing the titular dog. At the time, it wasn’t clear how they were going to do Marmaduke himself and I was under the impression they’d go the Scooby Doo route and use CGI. But it turns out they’re using a real Great Dane, which makes the movie that much more appealing to me. The film stars Emma Stone, Jeremy Piven, William H. Macy, Ron Perlman and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
Watch the trailer here.

I was pleasantly surprised with the original NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM. In what I figured was going to be nothing more than a quick paycheck for Mr. Stiller, it proved to be a decent film for the whole family. Even with that, I couldn’t help but groan when I heard they were making a sequel. However, once again, Mr. Stiller and company managed to surprise me by crafting a wholesome, intelligent film that turned out to be a good time.

We pick up a couple of years after the events of the first film, but now Larry Daley is a successful CEO of his own company and pretty far removed from his days at the museum. On a trip back to visit his old friends, he discovers that the museum is undergoing a massive renovation and that all of the old exhibits are being boxed up to be stored at the Smithsonian. After failing to stop the transfer, Larry gets a frantic call from Jebediah Smith (Owen Wilson) and Stiller must travel to Washington D.C. to rescue his friends.

Along with some familiar faces (Owen Wilson, Robin Williams, Steve Coogan), the sequel introduces us to a very charming Amelia Earhart, played wonderfully by the adorable Amy Adams. Watching her as Amelia, I couldn’t help but think that the film AMELIA would have been better with Amy instead of Hillary Swank. Amy Adams really stole the show and every scene with her in it was better because of her screen presence. Along with Earhart, we also get Al Capone (Jon Bernthal), Ivan the Terrible (Christopher Guest) and Napoleon Bonaparte (Alain Chabat). The evil trio is led by Kahmunrah, played by Hank Azaria, who also voiced The Thinker and Abe Lincoln. They and their henchman play the villains to Daley and his group of historical friends.

Like with most sequels, the second Museum film takes things up a notch and introduces more action and more characters to keep things rolling. Since they’re at the Smithsonian, nothing is off limits and virtually every historical figure in history is fair game. They even throw in some pop culture references to liven things up. The fun in the film comes from watching things come to life in the background as our heroes are making their way across the museum. Sure, it went over the top on several occasions and the screenwriters could use a lesson on historical dialect, but this isn’t a history lesson, it’s a fun film the whole family can appreciate. They only had 105 minutes, so they breeze through a few areas of the Smithsonian pretty quickly and have to pick and choose who they involve and who they don’t. Given the time constraints, I think they did a fine job and there are still plenty of characters available for the inevitable sequels.

The simple way to put this is that if you liked the first one, you’ll probably love the second. I actually liked the second one better and felt that moving the action to the Smithsonian was a great move and really opened things up. Getting them out of the museum and introducing various themes (art, animals, aviation, etc.) kept everything fresh and made the story move along faster. Fans of the original will definitely not be disappointed with the sequel.

I didn’t even know this was in development, but somehow director James L. Brooks got Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon together to do a softball movie. Other than the fact Reese will be playing a softball player in the film, not much else is known. IMDB doesn’t even have much information about it, but scrolling through the cast of characters gives the impression it’s a sports-themed movie. Said movie is still untitled, but below you can see the first picture from the set. We get Reese in full softball gear. She almost looks a little like Jenny Finch…no?

Owen Wilson has signed on to voice the famous comic-strip character Marmaduke in the upcoming live-action/CGI film. Wilson was the last piece of the puzzle, with William H. Macy, Lee Pace and Judy Greer already starring as the people and Emma Stone, Fergie, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Damon Wayans and Steve Coogan doing voice work.
It’s really hard to pull movies like this off (see SCOOBY DOO and GARFIELD for reference), but I always liked Marmaduke, so I have hopes for it.

Laura Dern (JURASSIC PARK) has joined the cast of LITTLE FOCKERS, the third film in the MEET THE PARENTS trilogy. She joins the previously announced Jessica Alba in the sequel. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Dern will play the head teacher at the school where the Fockers’ kids attend.
Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, Teri Polo and Owen Wilson are all reprising their roles. Presumably, mild humor and jokes that run on too long will also be returning.
