I’m still disappointed that Sam Raimi won’t be doing SPIDER-MAN 4. I really thought he’d give us a great film after being frustrated with SPIDER-MAN 3. But he’s moving on to bigger and possibly better things and has just signed on for EARP: SAINTS AND SINNERS. Earp was originally a comic book and is described as follows:
In a world where the American economy has all but collapsed to the levels of the Great Depression, infamous bandits roam the country and the law is as corrupt as the criminals its sworn to stop. Yet one lawman remains a steadfast moral compass for the people: WYATT EARP. Earp has collared more most-wanted men than anyone in history – but after a violent assignment claims the life of his brother, Wyatt sets out to forge a simple life in the only boomtown left: Las Vegas. With gorgeous women and free-flowing money on endless tap, Sin City attracts more people than a modern gold rush. Though Earp no longer wears a U.S. Marshall’s badge, his past is about to catch up to him. With nearly everything to lose, Earp will have to beat the odds stacked against him in order to bring old-fashioned justice to Sin City.
So it basically sounds like TOMBSTONE, but set in the future. I’m sure this made for a cool comic book, but I hope this doesn’t start a trend where we take traditional storylines and just set them in different times in history. Because there’s nothing original about that.

When it was suggested a while back that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks to play the Wizard in the simmering prequel to THE WIZARD OF OZ, titled OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, a lot of people got really excited. It seems like a project made for Downey. But the question has been looming ever since of who would take the directing reigns, with names like Sam Mendes, Adam Shankman and Guillermo del Toro surfacing as possibilities. But now it looks like Sam Raimi might be the man for the job with rumors swirling that he has been offered the gig.
To be frank, I don’t know much about the prequel, only that it revolves around how the Wizard became the Wizard. But it has that Oscar-y, musical, fun feel to it, leading me to believe it could get some serious critical acclaim if done properly. Combine that with RDJ at the top of his game and you have a sure-fire hit. I’m just not sure Raimi is the man for the job. I think any of the other directors rumored would be better, most notably Guillermo del Toro, who has some time on his hands after dropping out of THE HOBBIT.

Hot off the announcement that they’d be scrapping the planned SPIDER-MAN 4 with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire, Sony today announced that Marc Webb will officially be directing their new Spider-man franchise. Webb, whose only previous work of note at this point is the wonderful 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, will start shooting the film soon with eyes on a Summer 2012 release date. The script will be written by James Vanderblt, who apparently has such a great script that it served as the catalyst for the new vision.
Naturally, if Marc Webb is involved, the first thought is that he might try to recruit Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play the web crawler. I don’t see it happening since Sony has previously stated they wanted to start over and focus on Peter Parker’s high school days. Aside from the obvious casting questions, the next big question is whether or not Marc Webb can handle such a project. Some will point to the risks of choosing Sam Raimi in the first place or even directors like John Favreau and Christopher Nolan, who had never demonstrated they could handle high-profile franchise. The difference, in my opinion, is that those directors had experience and had made a variety of films. I’m not saying Marc Webb can’t do it, I’m just saying he hasn’t shown me anything yet that leads me to believe he can do it. Time will tell.

I’m a little devastated about this news. I’m not completely upset that Sony is getting a new director, but I’m really angry that they’re starting over. It’s too soon and I think there’s still stories that need to be told before we start rebooting the whole thing. And get the kid out of high-school. But Sony announced today that SPIDER-MAN 4 is, in fact, not going to happen. Instead, they’re going to reboot the entire franchise without Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. According to Sony, they’re returning to Peter Parker’s roots and following him as he deals with teenage issues and superhero powers. Sony is aiming for a summer, 2012 release date but no stars or directors are currently being mentioned for the film.
I was probably in the minority, but I really thought Sam Raimi was going to hit a huge home run with SPIDER-MAN 4. At the very least, they could have kept with SPIDER-MAN 4 and just re-cast everything like WB did with the Batman franchise. I think this is bad news for everyone and a severe blow to one of the most beloved superheroes of all time.

I can’t stand posting rumors, but this one might be too good to ignore. Movieline is reporting that John Malkovich is currently in negotiations to star as The Vulture, while Anne Hathaway is looking to star as Felicia Hardy. Comic fans will note that Felicia Hardy eventually becomes The Black Cat, but in Raimi’s world, Felicia will become a new villain called “The Vulturess”. Again, let me stress that this is rumor at this point, but it’s the closest we’ve come to confirmation of a Spider-man 4 villain.
I’m excited about Spider-man 4 and I still think Raimi has a few more good films in him. But I get nervous whenever classic characters get re-imagined. I don’t think this is a good sign, but I definitely like Malkovich as The Vulture.

Our Driver’s EDitorial is a weekly column designed to express our opinion on something going on in Hollywood today. Sometimes we whine and complain about something we wish was different, other times we heap praise on the system for getting it right.
There’s a lot of negative buzz going around the web world regarding Sam Raimi’s upcoming SPIDER-MAN 4. I’ve read everything from “Raimi doesn’t have it anymore” to “Spider-man 3 killed the franchise”. It’s ridiculous how fair-weather fanboys are. If a couple of snobbish critics dislike a film, the fanboys jump on it and the next thing you know, SPIDER-MAN 3 is the worst movie ever made. That’s insane, as is the notion that Sam Raimi destroyed the franchise or that he can’t make another great Spider-man film.

First, let’s get something out of the way; SPIDER-MAN 3 was not a bad film. Yes, it had its problems, but overall, it was a fun film. It was a good summer blockbuster and it still has the best action scenes in all of the Spidey films. I loved the opening fight between Peter and the New Goblin. It also had more action than the other films and was void of any slow spots that the other two suffered from. Despite its problems, SPIDER-MAN 3 was fun and far from the abomination that people are trying to make it out to be. If you buy into the hype that the studio forced Raimi to do some of the things he did, then you should have no fears about the fourth film.

Raimi just needs to make the film he wants to make. He needs to ignore everyone around him (ie: the studio) that want him to make a movie to sell action figures and not a truly great film. He also needs to avoid trying to make a better film than the DARK KNIGHT. There’s no competition between the two franchises because both of them are different, with different tones and goals. Getting into a mindset where you have to beat something that you’re not competing with could mean disaster for an artist. Aside from Superman, Spider-man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. There are plenty of great stories to be told and all Raimi has to do is tell a great story, like he has done so many times in the past.

However, in telling the story, he needs to do something with Peter’s love interest. Early reports have Kirsten Dunst reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson and if there’s one area of the Spider-man franchise that really needs some work, it’s with her character. Bryce Dallas Howard was only in the third film for a little while, but I found her ten times more appealing than Dunst. If Raimi has to come to one glowing realization, it’s that Dunst is a huge negative for any film she’s in. I’d like to see the Gwen Stacy angle explored some more and maybe boot out Dunst.

I know all the hype lately has surrounded the DARK KNIGHT, and that’s fine. But let’s not forget about our friendly neighborhood Spider-man. With a returning cast and a director that feels like he has something to prove, Spidey 4 should be a blast.
