It has been confirmed that the 2009 James Cameron film AVATAR, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver, will be released in a 2D special edition set as well as in 3D in 2010. The AVATAR: COLLECTOR’S EDITION (2D version) will be released on November 16, 2010. Right now we know that there will be an extended version of the movie, with at least 16 extra minutes of footage as well as 45 minutes of extras. I’m sure more information about this edition will be revealed sooner to the release date. It has also been confirmed that the 3D version of the film will only be available exclusively to purchasers of the Panasonic 3D Viera Plasma TV. Panasonic is working on making the film release available to early adapters of the 3D Viera Plasma TV, but that deal is still in negotiations. This Panasonic/Avatar package will be available in early December.
So, from where it stands right now, if you were planning on throwing down money for a high dollar 3D TV it may be worth the wait so you can get the exclusive AVATAR 3D package. If you’re not willing to go out and purchase a brand new 3D plasma TV around Christmastime (note the sarcasm) then you will have to settle with the regular 2D Collector’s Edition version. Either way, James Cameron is going to be making even more money on AVATAR with this Panasonic deal as well as the triple release of his film. Love him or hate him, the guy, or his team, are marketing geniuses.

After his great turn in THE HURT LOCKER, Anthony Mackie has been relatively quiet until now. Today he joins the cast of MAN ON A LEDGE, which is about a female psychologist trying to handle a former NYPD policeman that’s threatening to jump off a ledge. Sam Worthington will play the jumper and the psychologist hasn’t been cast yet. We don’t know what Mackie will play, but with the two juicy roles either taken or for a female, we can assume there’s more to the story than what little we know so far.
I’d like to see Mackie do some bigger movies. I think he’d do well in a big summer blockbuster or an action movie of sorts. My only complaint with him is that he always seems angry. No matter what he’s saying or how he says it, he always comes off like he’s angry at someone or something. So a romantic comedy is probably out of the question.

Sam Worthington continues his world domination by linking himself with another in-development project, this time with the thriller MAN ON A LEDGE. This comes hot off the heels of his official confirmation to star as the futuristic pilot DAN DARE. In Ledge, Worthington will play a former police officer threatening to jump to his death and the female psychologist trying to save him. The story sounds a little claustrophobic, but I’m guessing that there’s a deeper reason why he’s on the ledge and the mystery will be unraveled as the story goes on.
Asger Leth is looking to direct the film, who directed the documentary GHOSTS OF CITE SOLEIL which took a powerful look at the slums of Haiti. Going from a documentary to such a simple thriller seems like an odd move, but Ledge is going to need a unique vision so this doesn’t turn into PHONE BOOTH.

We heard the rumor a few months ago that Sam Worthington was going to be starring as Dan Dare in an upcoming film adaptation, but today we get official word that the actor is going to star as the daring, intergalactic pilot. Dan Dare was actually a British TV series back in the 50′s titled ‘Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future’ and that show is usually compared to the American Buck Rogers. Interestingly enough, the original show was set in the 90′s, which is another reminder of how disappointingly little we’ve advanced technologically in the past 50 years.
Worthington will be reuniting with his CLASH OF THE TITANS producer Basil Iwanyk for the project, who will also be returning for CLASH OF THE TITANS 2. Worthington has advanced quite far in Hollywood in just a short amount of time, already forming a production company (Full Clip Productions) and now even teaming with Radical Publishing to develop content for comic books.

I didn’t know much about THE DEBT before I watched the first trailer, but I have to say that the trailer did a good job of getting me interested in the story and eager to find out what happens. In the film, three young spies go undercover to kidnap an evil German scientist in World War II, but things go wrong at some point and they must keep a secret that they carry with them their entire lives. It looks like it’s told in two separate parts, one in present day and the other during the actual mission.
It features an all star cast that includes Sam Worthington, Hellen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Tom Wilkinson, Ciaran Hinds, Marton Csokas and Jesper Christensen. But perhaps the best part of the movie is that it’s directed by John Madden, who has been relatively quiet since he won the Oscar for SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. Watch the trailer here.

After the success of CLASH OF THE TITANS, I got the uneasy feeling in my stomach that they’d look to make a sequel. Even though it wouldn’t make much sense and it would be nothing more than a shameless ploy to capitalize on the original, we knew a sequel was coming. Today we learn that Warner Brothers has hired David Leslie Johnson and Dan Mazeau to start working on the screenplay for CLASH OF THE TITANS 2, which WB is looking to fast track. They also need a director, since we do know that Louis Leterrier will not be returning.
It has been reported for a while now that everyone involved is expected to reprise their roles, including Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton and Liam Neeson. I doubt they signed multi-picture deals, so I’m not convinced they’re returning. It seems odd that Worthington would go back and do a sequel to the worst movie he’s been in so far. But I guess if the money is right, it’d be hard to say no.

Sam Worthington, who has been the recent “It” man of Hollywood, has stepped up his game and will not only act in, but also produce the upcoming action/adventure film QUATERMAIN. The film will be based on the literary figure but will have a sci-fi spin on it. Here’s a little synopsis, in case you are unfamiliar with Allan Quatermain:
“Allan Quatermain was the hero of “King’s Solomon’s Mines,” a Victorian adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, and its sequel, ‘Allan Quatermain.’ In the first book, Quatermain leads an expedition into an unexplored region of Africa to find the brother of a friend as well as a fabled treasure of the lost mines.”
The film will follow the basic story, but instead of just going on an expedition to King Solomon’s Mines, the film will be set during a time where humans have left Earth and Quatermain is back on his adventure on a more “planetwide scale”. Right now the film has no director and is still in the early development stages. Keep your fingers crossed that this will be closer in range to the production value of AVATAR instead of CLASH OF THE TITANS.

Warner Home Video has announced the recent remake of CLASH OF THE TITANS, starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, will be released on Blu-ray July 27. 2010. The film follows the story of Perseus, a demi-god who goes on a quest to save Argos from the Kraken and Hades. Along the way he battles Medusa and other mythological beings. The original 1981 film was cheesy but known for it’s special effects, unfortunately the remake didn’t really add much in way of special effects and was still cheesy. The initial release of CLASH OF THE TITANS will include the film in Blu-ray,DVD and Digital Copy format. The special features include:
- Harnessing the Gods: Maximum Movie Mode
- Alternate Ending
- Deleted Scenes
- Sam Worthington: An Action Hero for the Ages
- Green Lantern Sneak Peak

I guess we can now add CLASH OF THE TITANS 2 to the list of sequels we don’t need. But dollar signs are in the air and Warner Brothers is moving forward on a sequel to this April’s hit. It’s believed that Sam Worthington and all of the original, surviving cast members will be returning for the sequel, but who won’t be returning is director Louis Leterrier. Deadline broke the news and was careful to mention that the decision to not bring back Leterrier was mutual between him and the studio, but after suffering through his Titans, I can’t help but think WB feel they can do better.
Even though this is definitely a pointless sequel, it doesn’t mean it will automatically be horrible. There are a lot of great storylines in ancient mythology that they can turn to and with a decent director and good screenwriter, they can make a good movie. The question is whether or not they’ll take the time to make it right or rush it to the screen to capitalize off the original’s success.

When the plans for the Blu-ray/DVD release of AVATAR were announced, I wasn’t sure how the lack of 3D or special features was going to impact the sales. I figured that not having 3D would lose a few sales, but I was for sure that the fact a special edition has already been announced for next November would definitely hurt the sales. But apparently, I was wrong on both accounts as the AVATAR Blu-ray is now officially the fastest selling Blu-ray of all time. Since it debuted on Thursday, it has sold 4 million DVD’s and 2.7 million Blu-rays for a total of 6.7 million units.
What’s cool about those numbers is that Blu-ray sales amounted for about 40% of the total sales. To put it in perspective, THE DARK KNIGHT took almost 18 months to sell 2.5 million Blu-rays. So that’s about $130 million in home video sales in four days. Just when you thought James Cameron couldn’t get any richer…

Trying to sit down and write a review for AVATAR, four months after it came out at theaters, makes me sympathetic to anyone that tried to write a review for TITANIC in April of 1998. Much like the sinking boat, AVATAR is suffering from the overhype machine and people are getting sick of hearing about it. When I saw AVATAR at theaters, I was blown away by the 3D and how great the film was. I truly loved it and felt that it was one of the best movie going experiences I’ve ever had. But now, it has a “been there, done that” kind of feel to it. And I’m not going to lie to you; the lack of 3D really does change the perspective of the film.

So, you’ve read that AVATAR is basically THE LAST SAMURAI, which is basically DANCES WITH WOLVES and there’s no arguing the lack of originality in the story. Cameron didn’t write ‘War and Peace’ here, he just took a tried and true story and made it his own. I don’t fault him for that because the story is great and it’s easy to get the audience emotionally involved with an innocent people as they’re being ambushed by the more powerful, evil people. The simple story helped us accept the blue Na’vi and made the whole story more real. Original it was not, but it was definitely a strategic move on Cameron’s part. While we’re getting mesmerized by the effects and 3D, we find ourselves actually caring about the characters.

But the combination lacks a little bit in 2D. Now we focus more on the story and the acting and we don’t have the extreme grandness of Pandora to sweep us away. That makes certain scenes a little less forgiving and some of the CGI problems more noticeable. For example, the dialogue between Jake and Neytiri in the beginning was tough to stomach without trees and flowers coming to life and distracting you from the cheesy dialogue. Now, it’s just two blue people that can’t seem to hit their marks.

However, the action is still fantastic and the 3D towards the end became less and less anyway, so it won’t be missed during the final battle. I still found myself enthralled with everything that was going on and it was just as intense as it was the first time around. Cameron is a master of the big finish and whether you watch AVATAR in 2D or 3D, the finale is a fun ride.

I feel like I’m being hard on the film, but if you had talked to me in December of 2009, I would have given you an hour-long diatribe about how great AVATAR is and would have encouraged you to go see it. But that was in 3D Imax and the film loses a little luster on a smaller screen. I will say that if you don’t have a big screen HD TV, then you shouldn’t even bother with this. For fun, I popped it into a few different sized TV’s and each time I went smaller, the movie lost a lot of its “uumph”. Much like AVATAR was ahead of its time when it was released at theaters, it seems to be ahead of it’s time on Blu-ray.
BLU-RAY REVIEW
Video: You already know that there’s a super, uber-edition of AVATAR that’s coming this November, so the real question is; “how does it look”. I can safely say that this is an amazing picture. It is absolutely stunning and it’s clear that what they didn’t include in special features, they made up for with video and audio quality.

Audio: The audio is also incredible. I feel confident recommending this as a purchase, just to use as a reference disc to show off to your friends. If you’ve poured some money into your home theater system, don’t hesitate to check this out.

In what might have been the closest race of the year so far, and might change once the final figures are in from today, DATE NIGHT managed to beat out CLASH OF THE TITANS at the box office. The Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy brought in $27.1 million while Sam Worthington and Titans managed $26.9 million. For those that don’t keep up with the box office numbers on a regular basis, the Sunday totals are always estimated and the actual numbers might vary once the final tally comes in. But for right now, it’s nice to see DATE NIGHT beating out the horrible CLASH OF THE TITANS. It appears the bad 3D was able to fool audiences the first weekend, but couldn’t do it two weeks in a row. I’m not surprised at all to see LETTERS TO GOD crack the top ten. As I’ve said before; there’s a huge market out there that studios just aren’t tapping into.
Next week sees the release of DEATH AT A FUNERAL and KICK-ASS. Although KICK-ASS has the fanboys on its side, I’m not sure it will appeal to mass audiences. I’m thinking the race next week is going to be close and with some positive word of mouth, DATE NIGHT might be able to make it two in a row.

1. Date Night $27.1 million
2. Clash of the Titans $26.9 million
3. How to Train Your Dragon $25.4 million
4.Why Did I Get Married Too $11 million
5. The Last Song $10 million
6. Alice in Wonderland $5.6 million
7. Hot Tub Time Machine $5.4 million
8. The Bounty Hunter $4.3 million
9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid $4.1 million
10. Letters to God $1.1 million

After the credits started to roll and I took off my 3D glasses, the person sitting next to me asked me what I thought of the film. I told them I didn’t like it and then rattled off five or six reasons why. They looked at me and said “well, if you don’t think about it or dissect it, it’s a good movie”. I didn’t know how to respond to that. So, there you have it; if you don’t think about the film or analyze any specific details, you might enjoy CLASH OF THE TITANS.

For the rest of you, it could be a long and arduous 2 hour movie going experience. Before I even begin to talk about the film, let me say that if you have to pay more for the 3D experience, don’t bother. This film was not meant to be shown in 3D and none of the 3D “effects” were worthwhile.
Those familiar with the 1981 film will recall that the center of the story is Perseus, played by current it-boy Sam Worthington. He is the son of Zeus (Liam Neeson) and he finds himself on a quest to defeat the evil Kraken, which threaten to destroy the city of Argos. In this world, Greek Gods are real and routinely interact with humans and the worship of the humans is at the center of the power struggle between Zeus and Hades (Ralph Fiennes).

The original film was kind of famous for being good, but a little cheesy. Even in 1981, after STAR WARS and ALIEN, the effects used in the film were a little behind the times. Over the years, audiences have grown to appreciate it for some of the cool creatures Ray Harryhausen created and the charm the film possessed. In 2010, the effects are on a whole new level, but no one told that to the filmmakers because the effects looked like something from the early 90’s and I say that hoping to not insult any film released in the early 90’s.

There are three action scenes; the first involving giant scorpions and this initial sequence was the highlight of the film as far as intensity and effects are concerned. The second scene occurred later in the film and focused on the battle between Perseus’s men and the evil Medusa. The setting was fine, but Medusa’s face and body looked like something out of a Playstation 2 game. There was zero intensity to the scene and even though Perseus’s crew were getting killed off left and right, I didn’t care. The final scene cemented the film’s incompetence where Perseus (while on Pegasus) was shown flying around during the final battle. It looked like someone holding a toy horse and moving around a TV screen. Just terrible.

For a film that is reliant on the effects and action scenes, it seems pointless to discuss the script or the acting, but some of the horrible lines in the film can’t go without criticism. The best was “I can serve you better as a man”, which was mumbled begrudgingly by Worthington at the end, right before he and Pegasus took a 30 second ride on the beach…while the sun set behind them. Yes, folks, that really happened.
I’m all for mindless summer action movies. We need those just as much as we need historical dramas and animated comedies. But this film was so haphazardly filmed and the script was so incoherent (why did they bring a peasant fisherman to meet the king?) that it can’t get a pass for being “mindless” or “fun”. But hey, if you don’t think about it, maybe you’ll enjoy it.

CLASH OF THE TITANS had all the makings of a huge hit; a recognizable star, a popular story, great previews and it was even in “3D”. The result was a whopping $61.4 million at the box office this past weekend, which was more than enough for the top spot. I had to put 3D in quotes because Titans had some of the worst 3D effects I’ve ever seen on film. There’s a point where 3D isn’t cool anymore and more films like Titans will reduce the life span of 3D. In what might be a surprise to some of you, Tyler Perry’s WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO managed $30 million, which beat out HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and ALICE IN WONDERLAND. Flying dragons and Johnny Depp can’t beat out Tyler Perry. And the AVATAR watch continues with the film pulling in another million to bring its record setting total to $742 million.
Next week sees the release of the Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy DATE NIGHT and a wider release of the Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning music biopic THE RUNAWAYS. I think after the bad word of mouth for Titans, DATE NIGHT should take the top spot, but you never know when it comes to 3D.

1. Clash of the Titans $61.4 million
2. Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too $30 million
3. How to Train Your Dragon $29.2 million
4. The Last Song $16.2 million
5. Alice in Wonderland $8.2 million
6. Hot Tub Time Machine $8 million
7. The Bounty Hunter $6.2 million
8. Diary of a Wimpy Kid $ 5.5 million
9. She’s Out of My League $1.4 million
10. Shutter Island $1.4 million

A kids movie without competition is almost guaranteed to win the box office on any given week. So HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON easily took the top spot this weekend with $43 million. But there were a few surprises, including the film’s only competition in DIARY OF A WIMPY KID, which dropped down to fifth place with only $10 million. Given how well received the film was, I’m surprised it wasn’t able to do better. Perhaps the most talked about film of the weekend was HOT TUB TIME MACHINE and it managed a meager $13.6 million, but given its R rating, that’s not too shabby. AVATAR finally dropped out of the top ten, but its grand box office total is now up to $740.4 million.
Next week sees the first really big movie of the year in CLASH OF THE TITANS with Sam Worthington. I think the film looks pretty good, but I’m not sure about it being in 3D. We also get the release of THE LAST SONG with Miley Cyrus, so we’ll see if she can transfer some of those Hannah Montana fans over to her regular films.

1 How to Train Your Dragon $43,300,000
2 Alice in Wonderland (2010) $17,300,000
3 Hot Tub Time Machine $13,650,000
4 The Bounty Hunter $12,400,000
5 Diary of a Wimpy Kid $10,000,000
6 She’s Out of My League $3,526,000
7 Green Zone $3,350,000
8 Shutter Island $3,175,000
9 Repo Men $3,048,000
10 Our Family Wedding $2,200,000

You should probably learn Jessica Chastain’s name now, because by this time next year, she will be a household name and you’ll be able to look back and say you remembered her before she was famous. The actress has just signed on to star in the thriller THE FIELDS as another detective intent on solving a local murder. The film already stars Sam Worthington and Jeffrey Dean Morgan and is written by Ami Canaan Mann.
But this project is a few films away for Ms. Chastain. She can next be seen in the upcoming Al Pacino-directed WILDE SALOME, which is an adaptation of a controversial Oscar Wilde work. But most notably, she’ll be starring in Terrence Malick’s TREE OF LIFE with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. That’s not a bad way to start out a career.

Normally, these would be two separate posts, but since they’re only rumors at this point and there isn’t much information on them, I decided to combine them. The first bit of news should excite everyone that’s following the casting drama with CAPTAIN AMERICA because it looks like Hugo Weaving will be starring as the film’s villain, Red Skull. There might be some validity to this since Weaving just starred in Joe Johnston’s THE WOLFMAN.
The next bit of news is more of a head scratcher and therefore I’m less likely to believe it. But Sam Worthington is reportedly considering starring as DAN DARE: THE PILOT OF THE FUTURE. I say it’s a head scratcher because no one under the age of 65 knows who or what that is. I had to look it up and it turns out that it was a “British Buck Rogers” and was a comic strip back in the 1950′s. Worthington can do anything he want right now and I think he could do something more relevant than Dan Dare.

Sam Worthington has signed on to yet another project, this time in the upcoming film THE FIELDS. Worthington will be playing a Texas homicide detective that has to team with a big city New York cop to investigate some Texas Bayou murders. What’s interesting about the project is that it will be directed by Ami Canaan Mann, who is the daughter of Michael Mann. Her father will be producing the film that’s based on actual events. Don Ferrarone wrote the script.
Up to this point, her resume isn’t exactly impressive, with nothing but an episode of ‘Friday Night Lights’ under her belt. But with some help from her dad, this could be an interesting film. Having Sam Worthington as lead isn’t a bad start.

Well…perhaps I should have put a “maybe” at the end of that title. A source wrote into the good folks over at Latino Review and dropped the scoop that Universal is looking to update another of their classic monster movies, this time with Hollywood’s current “it” boy, Sam Worthington. Supposedly, this Dracula tale will be more of an origins story, focusing on Vlad the Impaler, who was supposedly the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s original Dracula. Alex Proyas (THE CROW) is attached to direct the film from writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, currently called DRACULA: YEAR ZERO.
Dracula has seen many incarnations on the silver screen, but none of them have been particularly appealing. This story could be interesting if they chose to go a more realistic path with it. The trouble is that every horror movie has to have a hero and I’m guessing with a name like “Vlad the Impaler”, that Vlad is not a nice guy. I have to assume that one doesn’t get the nickname “the impaler” unless they’ve done some wacked out stuff in their day.

Sniff, sniff…I smell something in the air. It smells just like a sinking boat, as in TITANIC. AVATAR must be smelling it too as it managed another $49 million this past weekend, bringing it’s total to $429 million. That’s good enough for7th all time. It should easily move to 4th all time, probably before next weekend. Check out the top 7 of all time below the pic:

1 Titanic $600,788,188
2 The Dark Knight $533,345,358
3 Star Wars $460,998,007
4 Shrek 2 $441,226,247
5 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial $435,110,554
6 Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace $431,088,301
7 Avatar $429,040,000
The big movie that opened this weekend was DAYBREAKERS, which managed a measly $15 million, signaling that people need a little romance in their vampire movies. Michael Cera x2 was good enough for $7 million. Next week sees the release of THE BOOK OF ELI, which looks pretty decent. Check out the list below for the complete top ten:
1 Avatar $48,500,000
2 Sherlock Holmes $16,610,000
3 Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel $16,300,000
4 Daybreakers $15,000,000
5 It’s Complicated $11,007,000
6 Leap Year $9,165,000
7 The Blind Side $7,750,000
8 Up in the Air $7,100,000
9 Youth in Revolt $7,000,000
10 The Princess and the Frog $4,700,000

Outstanding indeed! AVATAR is a new visual wonderment for the eye to see. The film is so visually pleasing; watching it in 3D only enhances the amazing creation. To say it’s spectacular is an understatement. The world director James Cameron has created feels like it exists with beautiful new landscape and vibrant colors. It’s sort of a modern day WIZARD OF OZ. I believe in this world and I want to live there and with the 3D version it actually happens for 3 hours. AVATAR is a film meant for the movie theater going experience that I recommend all to see.

A paraplegic Marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), accepts a mission replacing his twin brother, who was killed in battle. The mission is in the Science department on a distant planet of Pandora. He is the only one that could use his brother’s “avatar” identity, which is literally an out of body experience. He is able to become a 9 foot blue Na’vi native that can run, breathe and live on it’s own. His mission is to learn more of these native people in order to find a way to get them to move their home peacefully so humans can extract a valuable resource that the Natives are living on. The alternative is to exterminate and Jake must decide to either follow his love for these people or his orders.

This is not necessarily a new story line but definitely a new way to tell it. I was surprised at just how immersed I was into this film. I was definitely hesitant about the blue CGI people I kept seeing from the previews. But what James Cameron did which is better than all the great special effects is give this movie heart. Avatar is overloaded with heart, which made the characters come to life in a way that I forgot about any CGI that may have been present. The love story is real and emotional. Like DISTRICT 9, AVATAR actually makes you root against the human race. That might sound unpatriotic, but I think it really simply means that we all just want to be better people.

The acting is well done as well. I’m glad to see Sigourney Weaver in a big movie roll again. Stephen Lang, who was a standout in this years PUBLIC ENEMIES, is great as the over-the-top, tough-as-nails colonel. Giovanni Ribisi is funny and commanding as the leader of the entire operation. Why isn’t he doing more work? Zoe Saldana is seamlessly believable as Neytiri, a Na’Vi warrior or lead blue person. The performances by her and Sam Worthington (the next big movie star) are the real standouts. I’ll admit, that I was a naysayer beforehand on these character-generated creatures but I was definitely won over.

There are obvious criticisms that could be made – questions unanswered, motives unexplained and story lines or characters that could be developed more but the movie is already 3 hours long and I think Cameron chose correctly on what to keep. I’m sure there are hours of extra footage or written storylines. All these criticisms can be overlooked with one key element and that is once again, heart… and a 300 million dollar budget. In all seriousness, the money means nothing without the heart. And you can tell Cameron was passionate when creating AVATAR. Get to the theater and watch AVATAR in 3D. This is a film that reminds us why we love movies.

I don’t think it was a question of if AVATAR was going to take the top spot at the box office, but rather how much the film would make. The answer is $73 million. Some will say that’s disappointing, but I think this film, like TITANIC, will have some serious staying power. The film is a marvelous spectacle and everyone seems to be in awe over it. That kind of word of mouth gets around and will keep the money rolling in for this film well into the new year. Last week’s #1 film, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, managed $15 million this week, which was good enough for second place. The only other new film this weekend was DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS, which took in $7 million. Considering how little I heard about that film, I don’t think that’s too shabby.
Next week sees the release of all the big Christmas movies, including; IT’S COMPLICATED, SHERLOCK HOLMES, NINE and others.

1 Avatar $73,000,000
2 The Princess and the Frog $12,224,000
3 The Blind Side $10,030,000
4 Did You Hear About the Morgans? $7,000,000
5 The Twilight Saga: New Moon $4,370,000
6 Invictus $4,170,000
7 A Christmas Carol (2009) $3,419,000
8 Up in the Air $3,100,000
9 Brothers $2,630,000
10 Old Dogs $2,289,000

In 2018, after Skynet has nearly destroyed humanity, John Connor (Christian Bale) must lead what is left of a human resistance to stop the machines before they terminate all of man kind.

Anton Yelchin is pulling double duty after staring in both STAR TREK and TERMINATOR SALVATION, which opened within weeks of each other this past summer. He does an okay job as a young Kyle Reese and in case you didn’t know, he becomes the stud that Michael Biehn creates of him in the original. However, the real stand out is Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, who is a man who discovers himself in this time period with his last memory being in a jail cell on death row. He is a dynamic actor who held a commanding presence on the big screen and that’s no small feat when stacked against Christian Bale. Wright is just a more interesting character than Connor is in this film. Don’t get me wrong, Bale does a fine job as Connor especially in the opening scene, but without the other films his presence seems far less relevant. Bryce Dallas Howard as Kate Connor is absolutely wasted here. I honestly didn’t understand why she was in the film and I have to believe most of her material ended up on the cutting room floor. I think she is a fantastic actress and was totally underutilized. That goes for Common as well, who played Barnes, Connor’s number one soldier. I didn’t even notice he was in the film until after I saw his name on the credits.

I’m not sure if this was the filmmakers’ intention, but the previews give away a key element that might have been a nice surprise for a character arc. However, the way the previews are set and the way the story is told it is quite obvious. I have a major problem with a specific character’s action in the film. It didn’t seem plausible in any sort of way. A character is saved by a machine that seems human, she then risks her life and everyone and the human race to rescue it. I’m fully aware that people do stupid things but that did not make sense at all. The friends and people that have kept her alive through this end time crisis are suddenly not near as important as this new half man, half machine that she has known for 24 hours.

The implausibility continues when T4 takes a very Bond-like turn and we see the evil villain divulge the evil plan before he finishes off the “good guy”. This got old in the Bond films, but here it’s a little ridiculous because the evil villain is an emotionless machine. The Bond villains did it out of pride and ego, but machines lack those human traits. A machine would choose the most logical path and this proved to be another misstep in a movie filled with them.

Where the film lacked in emotion, dialogue and story it strengthened in its action and visuals. The story wasn’t horrible because it already had blueprints made from the originals. The action was the true star of the film and that is where director McG excelled. The sound and visuals were extremely gripping. Sadly, those come in the opening scene and then again about half way through, and then are never matched again. These scenes are what made me enjoy TERMINATOR SALVATION. There is one shot at the beginning where Connor jumps into a helicopter that flies away, spins around and wrecks in what seems to be one continuous shot. It looks absolutely amazing! I actually wanted more and at that half way point I thought to myself; this movie is really working. Unfortunately, that momentum did not continue into the second half. I think the movie works on a sci-fi channel level. Maybe it should have its own series (ala Sarah Connor Chronicles) about the post apocalyptic time period, but I really hope the next big budget feature of this series gets terminated.

We just saw Sam Worthington in the new CLASH OF THE TITANS trailer, and now we get word of his next big-budget series, LAST DAYS OF AMERICAN CRIME. The film is a futuristic story about the government’s plan to broadcast a signal that would prevent people from committing crimes. The comic book is written by Rick Remender and is due to hit shelves in a three-part series next month.
I like Sam Worthington alright, but the guy is getting almost every big movie handed to him. The guy is getting so much work, he’s having to turn down big roles like THE TOURIST (his role went to Johnny Depp). Again, I like the guy, but I think Hollywood needs to cool off on him a little bit. As it is, he’s going to be in 2-3 big movies a year for the foreseeable future.

The first trailer for the 2010 summer blockbuster CLASH OF THE TITANS is out and although a teaser trailer, I think it looks pretty decent. The film stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades and Gemma Arterton as Io.
I was thinking about this film and remembering that I actually liked the original when I was a kid. However, I can’t stomach it now because the effects are so dated. So I was wondering if people 30 years from now are going to be saying the same thing about this one…
Watch the trailer here.
