Jeremy Renner to join Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames in Mission Impossible 4

I think we all knew another big name was coming when the drama started to swirl around Tom Cruise and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4.  What I wasn’t expecting was for that name to be Jeremy Renner.  Keeping in mind they’ve always been biased against Tom Cruise, Deadline is saying that Renner was hired in case Ethan Hunt doesn’t continue on with the series.  But to be fair, it’s not yet clear if Renner will be part of the team or will actually be a villain.  Given his acting chops and his recent choice in roles (Hawkeye), I would actually expect Renner to do something different and be a villain before I’d expect him to be buddy-buddy with Cruise.

The actor joins Cruise, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames in the sequel that’s to be directed by Brad Bird.  If Renner is, in fact, going to be part of Hunt’s team, then that still leaves the villain to be cast and I still don’t think they can get a better villain than Renner.

Ving Rhames joining Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg in Mission Impossible 4

I never really questioned whether or not Ving Rhames would return for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4, but today we have official confirmation that the underused actor will, in fact, return for the fourth film.  He announced on ‘Lopez Tonight’ (side note: I have no idea what that is) that he’d be returning as Luther Stickell in the series of films that have nothing in common other than him and Tom Cruise.  We’re also still waiting for an official announcement that Simon Pegg will be returning, although it does seem likely.

So with Brad Bird directing and TC and Ving back on board, I guess all we need now is a lead female character.  There were mumblings that Paramount was going to be giving Ethan Hunt a protege, but that was back when Paramount was supposedly trying to squeeze Tom out of the franchise.  I’m guessing Tom Cruise‘s willingness to take a pay cut might have given him more say-so on the direction of the story.  Given they want to start filming in September, we should be hearing a lot about this through the end of August.

Simon Pegg looking to rejoin Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 4

I’m still frustrated with all the hate being cast Tom Cruise’s way because KNIGHT AND DAY didn’t open to $100 million and the thought that an executive could use that as an excuse to not make another Mission Impossible film is just frustrating.  But hopefully, Paramount is smarter than that and will go ahead with M:I4 as planned.  Even though it technically hasn’t gotten the official greenlight, director Brad Bird is busy assembling his cast.  It looks like Simon Pegg is set to reprise his role as the lab nerd Benji Dunn.

We can of course assume Ving Rhames will also be back, who along with Cruise and Pegg would mean three returning characters.  Word has been circulating for a while that Paramount is looking to inject a young star to potentially replace Cruise as Ethan Hunt in future films, so that casting announcement should happen sooner than later, especially if they want to stick to shooting this thing in September.

Isla Fisher, Andy Serkis and Simon Pegg join John Landis’s Burke and Hare

Simon Pegg is going back to his horror-comedy roots and bringing Isla Fisher, Andy Serkis and Tom Wilkinson with him in BURKE AND HARE.  The film is loosely based off the true story of two gravediggers (Burke and Hare) that sell corpses to a medical school to earn extra money.  Pegg and Serkis will play Hare and Burke respectively.  Perhaps most interesting about this is that John Landis will be directing, who hasn’t done much since 1998’s BLUES BROTHERS 2000.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD is a great film, but aside from Pegg, it doesn’t seem like the same team is behind this one.  The premise of the film also seems a little creepy to be a flat out horror-comedy, so writers Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcoft have their work cut out for them.
