Steve Carell looking for A Boyfriend For My Wife

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Steve Carell is one of those comedians that I think if I were to sit down and talk to him, he’d crack me up.  He seems to have a naturally funny way about him, but for me, that doesn’t always translate well on the big screen.  Which is why I’d like to see him take some more challenging roles and do some dramas (he was great in DAN IN REAL LIFE) to expand his resume.  I’m not sure he’s going to accomplish that with his next film, A BOYFRIEND FOR MY WIFE.  The film is actually a remake of a 2008 Argentine movie from director Juan Taratuto in which a pushover husband concocts a plan to get out of his marriage by setting his wife up with a “legendary Lothario”.

No word on who Carell will play, but the role of the Lothario is by far the better of the two male leads.  The idea actually sounds funny, but maybe a little too familiar.  Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin will be writing the script.

Date Night (Blu-ray)

Friday, August 20th, 2010

There was only one way a movie starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell could not be great, and that’s if the filmmakers told Fey and Carell to not be Fey and Carell.  Unfortunately, it seems that’s exactly what happened.  The film had moments, but overall I wanted more traditional comedy from the two superstars and less of them trying to be action heroes.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey in Date Night

Carell and Fey are Phil and Claire Foster, a married couple stuck in a rut that decides to branch out and go have dinner in the city.  But when they take another couple’s reservation, they get mistaken for that couple, who happens to be involved in blackmailing a top government official that may or may not have ties to the mob.  So our heroes go on the run and must find a way to clear their name, enlisting the help of a shirtless Mark Wahlberg.  There are several issues with the film that prevent it from ever taking off, but one of the main problems is that they tried to hard to create a twisting, complicated plot.  The point is not to try and tell a government conspiracy story or anything like that, the point is to get the two comedians into humorous situations.  It’s not complicated and in 88 minutes, they didn’t have time to develop the story they tried to tell.  If they had stuck with the two comedians running from the mob boss, it would have given more time to Fey and Carell to provide some laughs and less time trying to figure out a subplot we didn’t care about anyway.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey in Date Night

We also have some other subplots going on that would have done well if they had been explored further.  The Fosters kept comparing themselves to their friends (played by Mark Ruffalo and Kristen Wiig) who were going through a divorce because their marriage became stale.  Obviously, the Fosters are concerned they’ll suffer the same fate.  This worked as an underlying issue they deal with while on the run, but it could have also been a source of laughs that instead got pushed to the side.  A stale marriage is something that every married person can relate to and it felt like there were more things to explore with that idea.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey in Date Night

I actually liked the addition of Mark Wahlberg’s Holbrooke character as it gave them a legitimacy that they otherwise wouldn’t have had.  Since he actually knew what he was doing, it allowed the audience to accept some of the situations and some of the plot connectors.  I also loved the running shirtless gag and enjoyed how everyone that came in contact with him had to mention it.  But the single laugh-out-loud moment came when Carell impersonated Wahlberg to a hilarious degree.  It made me want another like-scene in which Carell could play off the seriousness of Wahlberg.

Steve Carell and Mark Wahlberg in Date Night

Tina Fey’s strength comes with her comedy structure and the “unraveling” of comedy.  As an actress, she’s not a naturally funny person and so I found myself not liking her as much in this as I have in her previous works.  She, like Carell, is best when playing off someone else and we didn’t get enough of those moments.  The whole film felt like it was being held back and the proof of this can be found on the outtakes, which turned out to be funnier than many of the scenes in the film.

BLU-RAY REVIEW

Video: This transfer had some problems, most noticeably during dark scenes in the city.  Although overall it is a decent transfer, there is some considerable grain/noise that can be distracting at times.

Audio: The audio was fine.

Deleted Scenes (5:47): These added nothing to the film but they were funny to watch, but that’s just because it’s Fey and Carell and they are funny no matter what.

Alt City (1:48): These were just alternate takes of some scenes, they were funny but we saw most of them during the credits.

Extended Scenes (10:25): It was good that these scenes were trimmed down because they added nothing to the plot, but they were worth the watch.

Shawn Levy and Steve Carell on the set of Date Night

Directing 301 (21:48): This featurette follows director Shawn Levy and his crew as they work behind the scenes.  They put a lot of work into this feature and it’s well worth the watch, you really don’t get too many features that aren’t full of film clips.

Disaster Dates (4:43): Just like it sounds, the cast and crew reminiscing about their bad dates.  Not as many good stories as you would expect but worth the watch.

Directing Off Camera (3:46): This is really interesting to watch but hard to explain, basically Levy rolls the cameras and give direction during the scenes.  He gives an introduction to this little featurette in which he explains everything.

Steve and Tina Camera Tests (3:10): Another introduction from Mr. Levy and then the screen test.  Nothing too special here.

Gag Reel (5:49): Not a bad gag reel and quite fun to watch although there was some of that giggling at some unseen joke.

PSA’s (2:02): These were cute and a great way to promote a movie.

Dinner for Schmucks

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

I was reluctant to give this film such a high score because it follows formulas that have been used in old ‘80s sitcoms – you know, the episode of “Saved by the Bell” or “Mr. Belvedere” where the cool kids at school invite the dorky girls to the dance to make fun of them. But there’s that one cool kid that feels bad about it and actually falls for the dorky girl, and the episode ends with a kiss while the studio audience goes “Oooooh.” The cool kid in DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS is Paul Rudd, a sixth floor analyst at a financial firm trying to make it to the seventh floor. His boss invites him to share in what he and the other executives call Dinner for Winners, but as the title of the movie implies, it is anything but. What allows this movie to transcend its formula are subplots hilariously acted out by great comic talent, most of which get more laughs than the dinner itself. The problems come with the conclusion and the limited usage of Paul Rudd’s talents, but other than that you will get a pleasant dinner with some colorful characters and some great belly laughs.

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in Dinner For Schmucks

Rudd’s Tim has ideas to move up the corporate ladder, but as an audition his boss, played slyly by Bruce Greenwood, he must find a loser to be judged in this dinner. At first he is convinced to forgo the dinner by his girlfriend, Julie (played sparingly by Stephanie Szostak), but then he runs into Barry (literally), played ridiculously clueless by Steve Carell, and he can’t pass up the chance. Barry’s schmuckiness exists on many levels, but he’s always trying to help his new friend in the days before the dinner, which lead to disastrous misunderstandings with Julie. Barry’s key schmucky talent, however, is taxidermy – and he recreates classic masterpieces with dead mice. There is a riotous side story with Tim and a psycho ex-girlfriend, played great by Lucy Punch, and good laughs at the expense of the Swiss, but the let down is the dinner itself. We get to meet the collection of circus freaks the execs bring, but they are quick laughs that are either not used enough or just sophomoric. That and the awkward way the tables get turned on the executives are the shortcomings, but the film as a whole has many great laughs, and that’s what we’re there for, right?

Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in Dinner For Schmucks

Steve Carell does great things with Barry, making him an unbelievably clueless character that we believe in. He has a history that gets revealed through his mouse-terpieces, and when it is brought up his heartbreak is palpable…because we care about him. Other great laughs come from “Flight of the Conchords” Jemaine Clement is a great character as an artist working with Julie, and the scenes he gets, he owns – with hilarious dialogue and eccentricities. Another very funny character is played by Zach Galifinakis as a co-worker of Barry’s…with talents of his own. But Paul Rudd is not just a straight man, and posing him solely as such is a waste of talent. He played it straight in I LOVE YOU, MAN, but still was given comical lines to match Jason Segel. No such writing was given to him here, and that’s a shame. But the film still supplies copious amounts of comedy jokes that had many in the theater laughing out loud. This is a summer comedy worth a viewing.

Inception is tops again at the box office, Twilight: Eclipse out of the top ten

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

With very little competition at the box office this weekend, it’s no surprise that the great INCEPTION would hold tight at #1 for the third straight week.  The film’s biggest competition came from DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS, which actually beat INCEPTION on Friday’s totals, but lost ground the rest of the weekend.  The other new releases this weekend didn’t fare so well with CHARLIE ST. CLOUD opening in a very weak 6th spot while CATS AND DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE fared slightly better by opening in 5th.  Neither of those openings surprise me since St. Cloud looks horribly depressing and Cats and Dogs looks plain silly.

Next week is the calm before the storm with the funny-looking comedy THE OTHER GUYS opening before the big August 13th weekend, where THE EXPENDABLES, SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD and EAT, PRAY, LOVE all open up.  Chances are good THE OTHER GUYS will take the top spot, but I suspect INCEPTION will hang in the top five for a few more weeks now.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page in Inception

1. Inception $26 million

2. Dinner For Schmucks $23 million

3. Salt $19 million

4. Despicable Me $15 million

5. Cats And Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore $12.5 million

6. Charlie St. Cloud $12 million

7. Toy Story 3 $5.5 million

8. Grown Ups $4.5 million

9. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice $4.2 million

10.  Ramona and Beezus $3.5 million

Zach Galifianakis to star in Reply All

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Posted by: Nathan Swank

Comedian Zach Galifianakis has been getting offers left and right after his scenes stealing performance in the hilarious THE HANGOVER. We learn now that he will be staring and producing in REPLY ALL. The yet to be written film was recently purchased by Dreamworks from the pitch that Galifianakis will play a guy that presses the “Reply All” button on an e-mail that was not meant for all to see. He will spend the rest of the film dealing with the repercussions. I think theirs potential in this idea but the studio is definitely gambling on the power Galifianaki’s popularity.

Mr. Galifianakis has a lot of projects lined up soon. Of course theirs THE HANGOVER 2 but coming out later this year he has IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY and DUE DATE, which also stars Robert Downey Jr. And of course, DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS staring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd will hit theaters on Friday.

Steve Carell to be Raised by Wolfs

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

It pains me to write “wolfs” instead of “wolves”, but I didn’t write the script, so I have to go with what they say.  After announcing he’s officially leaving ‘The Office’, we all assumed Steve Carell would get to work producing and starring in a slew of films.  First up for the comedian is RAISED BY WOLFS, which apparently has nothing to do with the furry four-legged mammals, but rather “Wolfs” is the character’s last name, hence the suspected misspelling.  This will mark the first film from Steve Carell’s newly formed Carousel Productions.  Les Firestein wrote the script and as of right now, no plot details have been released.

Firestein is an accomplished writer, working on shows like ‘The Drew Carey Show’ and ‘In Living Colour’.  In their heyday, those were pretty funny shows.  I like Steve Carell, but probably not as much as most fans.

Inception holds back Salt while Twilight: Eclipse drops out of the top five at the box office

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

The magnificent INCEPTION made it two weekends in a row by holding off Angelina Jolie and SALT.  I have to admit that I was a little worried that INCEPTION wouldn’t be received well by the masses, but I’m extremely happy I’m wrong.  Let’s hope the success of the film leads to bigger and better things for Hollywood.  I’m impressed with SALT, even if the movie was average.  It’s nice to see a female action star carry a movie like this.  I can say I’m not surprised about the fall of THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE.  The film fell out of the top five and may not even crack the top ten next weekend.

Next week sees the release of DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS and normally I’d say INCEPTION should have no problem making it three weekends in a row.  But there is a massive void of summer comedies this year and audiences might be clamoring for something funny at the theater.  I don’t think Schmucks looks very funny, but Carell and Rudd have been able to carry movies before.  If Schmucks doesn’t do it, then THE OTHER GUYS should take the top spot the following weekend.

Joseph Gordon Levitt in Inception

1. Inception  $43.5 million

2. Salt  $36.5 million

3. Despicable Me  $21.4 million

4. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice  $9.7 million

5. Toy Story 3  $9 million

6. Ramona and Beezus  $8 million

7. Grown Ups  $7.5 million

8. Twilight Saga: Eclipse  $7 million

9. The Last Airbender  $4.5 million

10. Predators  $2.6 million

Twilight: Eclipse can’t keep up with Despicable Me at the box office

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I have to admit that I’m a little shocked at the numbers for Universal’s DESPICABLE ME.  I understand that a kid’s movie will always do well, no matter when it’s released, but DESPICABLE ME didn’t have any recognizable characters, poor previews and very little buzz surrounding it.  Yes it had Steve Carell, but kids don’t care about that.  So for it to not only beat THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, but to beat it by such a wide margin, I’m surprised.  And although I shouldn’t be surprised at the huge drop-off for Eclipse, 52% seems like a lot given the crazy fan loyalty for the films.  Apparently, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart don’t merit repeat viewings.  But I’m happy to see the quirky independent dramedy CYRUS crack the top ten.

Next week is INCEPTION and for all intent and purposes, it should be #1.  But most people (including myself) still don’t understand what the movie is about and American audiences tend to shy away from things they don’t understand.  I think the movie looks fantastic, but you throw Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan on the same movie and I’m going to see it no matter what.

Despicable Me

1. Despicable Me $60 million

2. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse  33.3 million

3. Predators $25.3 million

4. The Last Airbender  $17.1 million

5. Toy Story 3  $22 million

6. Grown Ups $16.5 million

7. Knight and Day $8 million

8. Karate Kid $5.6 million

9. The A-Team $1.7 million

10. Cyrus $1 million

Kevin Bacon joins Steve Carell and Emma Stone in new comedy

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Ren McCormack himself, Kevin Bacon, has signed on as the latest star to join the still-annoyingly-untitled comedy with Steve Carell.  But I have to take exception to this news, not because of Kevin Bacon, but because the description of the film seems to have changed.  In the beginning, the film was about a man struggling with his marriage that tries to reconnect with his kids and dealing with his best friend.  But now, it appears that “best friend” is now being replaced with “life coach” with Ryan Gosling playing that particular character.  So I think the moral of the story here is that we’re not completely sure what the film is about, but we know it involves a man struggling with his marriage.  Bacon will be playing a co-worker that starts an affair with Carell’s wife (Julianne Moore).

The film stars Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Analeigh Tipton, and the aforementioned Ryan Gosling.  John Requa will be directing.  Now hurry up and get a title already.

Date Night

Monday, April 12th, 2010

I’ve been thinking about the recent comedies that have really made a dent in pop culture. Movies like ANCHORMAN, SUPERBAD and THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN have the common thread of incredibly funny outtakes. Do not overlook these gems on DVD, they are hilarious. And they are hilarious because the people involved understand comedy and their directors often give them free reign to improvise and basically make up the money lines as they go. With the new movie DATE NIGHT, director Shawn Levy looks as though he did the same, riding the wave of two great comic actors, Steve Carell and Tina Fey (themselves riding the waves of their successful NBC TV shows), to a genuinely funny comedy about a married couple fighting off marital complacency. The element that makes this comedy different than the ones listed, however, is the lack of raunchy humor which keeps the rating at PG-13 and makes it more accessible to a larger audience. And the outtakes that are shown during the closing credits indicate that maybe even the movie could have been funnier had that consideration for family audiences been kicked to the curb. ‘Cause I guarantee you Tina Fey had some dirty, dirty ideas. I love you, Tina.

Tina Fey and Steve Carell in Date Night

Steve Carell and the lovely Goddess Tina play Phil and Claire Foster, who do what few families do and that’s stick to a regimented date night routine to allow themselves alone time away from the kids. They seem to fall into a pattern, however, and in order to break the pattern, they decide to trek to New York City, go to a trendy restaurant, and take another couple’s reservation to get a seat at said restaurant. As you have seen from the previews, the mistaken identity of the reservation leads to hired killers chasing them in a series of car chases, foot races and just generally a great deal of running around New York looking for that all too convenient final way out. As luck would have it, the way out of their jam comes in the form of a shirtless Mark Wahlberg (playing up his old Marky Mark persona), who provides them with the information and help to traverse a plotline that involves ruthless mobster Ray Liotta and perverted political official William Fichtner and hunting henchmen Common and Jimmi Armstrong, all the while running and screaming through the city with winning quips delivered throughout, and only the occasional heartfelt monologue on what is truly wrong with their marriage.

Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg and Steve Carell in Date Night

Steve and Tina deliver on their comic lines throughout, but that’s really no surprise. What is surprising is the reserve with which they carry on throughout the film. There is structure and guidance, not simply a free for all, and that keeps everyone tied to the story and not simply riffing like a jazz session. When Mark Wahlberg comes into the mix, he goes Matthew McConaughey-shirtless to get some good laughs, to include some good Hebrew dialogue (how many movies can say that) and the other supporting characters are given some funny and essential parts as well, most surprisingly James Franco, who with Mila Kunis play the reservation theft victims and are given time to shine on their own. Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig also shows up to give NBC more comedy branding, but the two carrying the movie are of course Tina Fey and Steve, and the fans of their respective shows will not be disappointed. But again, don’t forget to stay behind after the credits to catch all the outtakes for the real laughs you don’t want to miss.

Analeigh Tipton joins Steve Carell and Emma Stone in upcoming comedy

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Former ‘America’s Next Top Model’ contestant Analeigh Tipton is getting a chance as an actress as she has signed on to star in the still-untitled comedy featuring Steve Carell.  She joins a cast that includes Carell, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.  Tipton will be playing a babysitter that has a crush on Carell’s character, but is also the crush for Carell’s 13 year-old son.  As previously mentioned, Carell plays a father trying to reconnect with his kids while his life unravels.

So if Emma Stone is playing Carell’s daughter and he also has a 13 year-old son, I’m not sure why he needs a babysitter.  I have to assume that either she’s a local neighbor or they’re going to throw in a little kid at some point.

Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Zach Galifianakis in Dinner For Schmucks trailer

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I should love everything about the comedy DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS.  It has an incredible cast that includes Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Jemaine Clement, Lucy Punch, Ron Livingston and Bruce Greenwood.  The premise is hilarious in that a young executive (Rudd) is obligated to go to a dinner party with his boss where he and his colleagues do nothing but humiliate unknowing guests.  But something about this trailer didn’t resonate with me.  I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I didn’t laugh and now I’m less excited to see it than when I was just reading about it.  Hopefully this will be one of those films that’s funnier than what the previews lead on.

Jay Roach (MEET THE FOCKERS) directs the film that’s opening July 23rd.  Watch the trailer here.

Clash of the Titans holds back Tyler Perry for #1 at the box office

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

CLASH OF THE TITANS had all the makings of a huge hit; a recognizable star, a popular story, great previews and it was even in “3D”.  The result was a whopping $61.4 million at the box office this past weekend, which was more than enough for the top spot.  I had to put 3D in quotes because Titans had some of the worst 3D effects I’ve ever seen on film.  There’s a point where 3D isn’t cool anymore and more films like Titans will reduce the life span of 3D.  In what might be a surprise to some of you, Tyler Perry’s WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO managed $30 million, which beat out HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and ALICE IN WONDERLAND.  Flying dragons and Johnny Depp can’t beat out Tyler Perry.  And the AVATAR watch continues with the film pulling in another million to bring its record setting total to $742 million.

Next week sees the release of the Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy DATE NIGHT and a wider release of the Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning music biopic THE RUNAWAYS.  I think after the bad word of mouth for Titans, DATE NIGHT should take the top spot, but you never know when it comes to 3D.

Sam Worthington in Clash of the Titans

1. Clash of the Titans  $61.4 million

2. Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too  $30 million

3. How to Train Your Dragon  $29.2 million

4. The Last Song  $16.2 million

5. Alice in Wonderland  $8.2 million

6. Hot Tub Time Machine  $8 million

7. The Bounty Hunter  $6.2 million

8.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid  $ 5.5 million

9.  She’s Out of My League  $1.4 million

10.  Shutter Island  $1.4 million

Emma Stone joining Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling in new comedy

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

The adorable Emma Stone has signed on to star in the still-not-titled comedy with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling.  Stone will be playing Carell’s daughter and Gosling’s love interest.  Plot details are still sketchy, but Carell will be playing a man whose life is unraveling as he deals with marriage problems and issues with his kids.  The film sounds a little too familiar to Carell’s DAN IN REAL LIFE, but at least this one doesn’t have Dane Cook in it.  John Requa and Glenn Ficarra will direct from a script by Dan Fogelman.

I’ve become a big fan of Emma Stone lately and I thought she was great in ZOMBIELAND.  The question mark in this film is Ryan Gosling, who has done well in dark comedies, but might be a little too serious for something like this.

Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell team up for new comedy

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Where has Ryan Gosling been lately?  His main squeeze Rachel McAdams is everywhere lately, but he seems to be staying low.  He used to be attached to every comic book movie in production, but none of the roles ever panned out for him.  Today we learn that he’s going to be starring alongside Steve Carell in an untitled comedy.  In it, Gosling will play the smooth best friend while Steve Carell will play a man struggling with his kids.  The film will be directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS).

This sounds more like a supporting role for Gosling and oddly similar to Dane Cook’s character in DAN IN REAL LIFE, which this film already sounds too much like.  Gosling is no stranger to subtle comedy, but I still enjoy him more in the darker, more serious roles.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey Looking to Reteam on Mail-Order Groom

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Posted by: Kristy Sturdivant

Steve Carell and Tina Fey may be doing another comedy together. The two actors are in preliminary talks to star in the Warner Bros. comedy MAIL-ORDER GROOM.  The story will follow a woman (Fey) who is unlucky in love and decides to acquire a mail-order groom (Carell) from Eastern Europe.  As I said before this is still in the very preliminary stages and depends on the schedules of Ms. Fey and Mr. Carell.  Both actors can be seen in their upcoming film DATE NIGHT which opens April 9, 2010. The concept of this film sounds great and will be that much better if Fey and Carell decide to go ahead and do it.

Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg in Date Night Trailer

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

The first trailer for the upcoming comedy DATE NIGHT is out.  The film features Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, James Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Ray Liotta and just about every actor that’s ever appeared on film, ever.  Okay, maybe not, but there are a lot of stars with either featured roles or small cameos.  The film revolves around a boring couple (Carrell and Fey) that get entangled in a mess when they pose as another couple in order to get seated at a restaurant.  Watch the trailer here.
