Cats & Dogs (Blu-ray)

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I have two golden retrievers and a border collie of my own and as cute as they were as puppies, even I have to admit that there is nothing cuter than a Beagle puppy.  The CATS AND DOGS filmmakers knew this as well, which is why they chose a Beagle puppy as the star of the film.  Just like in real life, a puppy’s uber-cuteness makes it hard to be mad or frustrated with him/her for very long and the cuteness spewing from this film makes it hard to be aggravated with the lackluster filmmaking.

Cats and Dogs

While watching it, the biggest question that popped into my mind was; why hasn’t this been done before?  The idea of crafting an entire film that pits dogs and cats against each other is so obvious, I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t already milked it to death.  In this film, they’ve created a world where dogs are kind of the “G.I. Joes” and cats are the “Cobras”.  When you boil it down, that’s essentially what this is, just with more fur.

Cats and Dogs

The plot is straight out of your typical spy/action movie where a young Beagle pup (voiced wonderfully by Tobey Maguire) is thrust into the secret agent world when he gets mistakenly chosen by a family.  Reluctantly, the seasoned vet (voiced by Alec Baldwin) trains the young rookie to protect a formula the pup’s master is working on that would cure all dog allergies.  Unfortunately for all of them, Mr. Tinkles is out for that formula, but for his own evil plans.  This is not a complicated premise, it’s really just an excuse to get cute dogs and cute cats together for 90 minutes.

Cats and Dogs

I really appreciated the inclusion of so many subtle inside dog and cat jokes.  I loved the play on the different stereotypes for each animal and got a kick out of seeing how they used the animal’s habits in the spy world.  I only wish they had done more of it and focused more on the intelligent subtleties and leave the childish slapstick out.  There’s a surprisingly fun film here, but sometimes it gets lost in the unnecessary silliness.  But like I mentioned earlier, some of the film’s shortcomings can be forgiven because the animals are so darn cute.  That’s a positive for those of us that love animals, but I’m not sure non-animal lovers will be so kind.

Cats and Dogs

Even though some of this will make a lot of adults roll their eyes, there are enough puns and funny bits that will keep the interest peaked.  Sean Hayes does a fantastic job voicing Mr. Tinkles, who alone is worth the price of admission.  If you have little ones and you want something to keep their (and your) attention for 90 minutes, CATS & DOGS is a safe bet.

BLU-RAY REVIEW

When CATS AND DOGS first came out on DVD, there was no widescreen edition.  For some reason, Warner Brothers didn’t release the widescreen version for many months later.  So a lot of you might never have seen the widescreen version of the film.

Video: The eventual widescreen DVD wasn’t bad, but this is a notable upgrade for the film.

Audio: The audio was also a significant upgrade

Commentary with Lawrence Guterman, James Bissell, Chris DeFaria and Sean Hayes: I imagine that working with animals is a very difficult and challenging feat and I was happy to hear the director and producers talk about the difficulties revolved around filming an entire film with animals.  Sean Hayes was a little out of place, but he offered up some humorous tidbits that helped keep the track rolling.

HBO First Look (15:03): This is just an extended commercial for the film.  Some First Look’s have a lot of behind the scenes footage, but this one had more movie clips than anything.

Teaching a New Dog New Tricks (5:58): This is a great featurette, although a bit short.  But they talk to the dog trainer about how they got the dogs to do various stunts and behave naturally.  They also go into the different CGI effects that were used.  Well worth the 5 minute investment.

Dog’s Rule (:52): A quick montage of various scenes from the film featuring dogs.

Mr. Tinkles Screen Test (1:37): This is a silly montage of Mr. Tinkles acting out various scenes from famous movies.

Mr. Tinkles Speech (1:10): Mr. Tinkles gives a speech about the state of the film industry.  Pretty funny, but not sure who this was for.

With the sequel, CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE, coming out on July 30th, it is only natural that Warner Home Video would release the original 2001 CATS & DOGS in all it’s Blu-ray glory around the same time.  The first CATS & DOGS  will be coming at you on July 20, 2010.  The film follows the age old battle between cats and dogs as they try to secure top-secret high tech devices from humans. This is a favorite here at Flix66 and one that everyone should see.  And just in case there was any question about where we stand, let me just say: Dogs Rule!  Special features include:

  • Five featurettes:
    • HBO First Look: Cats & Dogs
    • Teaching a New Dog New Tricks
    • Mr. Tinkles Audition Tape
    • Dogs Rule
    • Mr. Tinkles Speech
  • Commentary by actor Sean Hayes, director Lawrence Guterman, producer Chris DeFaria and production designer James Bissell

Marc Webb is officially directing the new Spider-Man movie

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Hot off the announcement that they’d be scrapping the planned SPIDER-MAN 4 with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire, Sony today announced that Marc Webb will officially be directing their new Spider-man franchise.  Webb, whose only previous work of note at this point is the wonderful 500 DAYS OF SUMMER, will start shooting the film soon with eyes on a Summer 2012 release date.  The script will be written by James Vanderblt, who apparently has such a great script that it served as the catalyst for the new vision.

Naturally, if Marc Webb is involved, the first thought is that he might try to recruit Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play the web crawler.  I don’t see it happening since Sony has previously stated they wanted to start over and focus on Peter Parker’s high school days.  Aside from the obvious casting questions, the next big question is whether or not Marc Webb can handle such a project.  Some will point to the risks of choosing Sam Raimi in the first place or even directors like John Favreau and Christopher Nolan, who had never demonstrated they could handle  high-profile franchise.  The difference, in my opinion, is that those directors had experience and had made a variety of films.  I’m not saying Marc Webb can’t do it, I’m just saying he hasn’t shown me anything yet that leads me to believe he can do it.  Time will tell.

Sony Rebooting the Spider-Man franchise, say goodbye to Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

I’m a little devastated about this news.  I’m not completely upset that Sony is getting a new director, but I’m really angry that they’re starting over.  It’s too soon and I think there’s still stories that need to be told before we start rebooting the whole thing.  And get the kid out of high-school.  But Sony announced today that SPIDER-MAN 4 is, in fact, not going to happen.  Instead, they’re going to reboot the entire franchise without Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.  According to Sony, they’re returning to Peter Parker’s roots and following him as he deals with teenage issues and superhero powers.  Sony is aiming for a summer, 2012 release date but no stars or directors are currently being mentioned for the film.

I was probably in the minority, but I really thought Sam Raimi was going to hit a huge home run with SPIDER-MAN 4.  At the very least, they could have kept with SPIDER-MAN 4 and just re-cast everything like WB did with the Batman franchise.  I think this is bad news for everyone and a severe blow to one of the most beloved superheroes of all time.

Brothers

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

In my short time as a military wife I remember clearly the few brief discussions I had with my husband about him deploying overseas.  Although I was blessed and fortunate to never have to deal with watching a loved one go to war, I remember the subject always looming in the back of my mind.  Even though we have been removed from the military for several years, I found those thoughts and feelings rushing to the foreground as I watched BROTHERS. And even though I never had to deal with it directly, I can empathize and have deep respect for those men and women who are still facing this situation even today.

Brothers 2

In BROTHERS we meet Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire), his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and two daughters a few days before he is about to go back to Afghanistan.  Before he heads out he goes to pick up his younger brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) from prison where he has been for the past few years.  Several days or weeks after being in Afghanistan, Cahill’s helicopter is shot down and he is (unbeknownst to anyone) captured and held as a P.O.W.  His wife gets word that he is dead and the first half of the film is her coping with the loss of her husband with the help of Sam’s brother and family.  After Cahill is recovered and comes home, the film revolves around his integration back into life and his family after the traumatic experience of being captured.

Brothers 4

The highlight of this film was the acting of Tobey Maguire.  His performance was incredible from start to finish.  His journey through the film: from loving father and husband to haunted and broken war veteran was so believable it was shocking.  If he’s not nominated for an Academy Award it would be appalling.  The other stand out performance was from the young actress, Bailee Madison, who played his daughter Isabelle.  The role required a lot of emotional range from such a young actress and she pulled it off without a hitch.  Look for her in future films, she’s a very talented young lady.

Brothers 1

The one flaw of the movie would have to be the pacing.  The entire time it felt like the audience was being led to a really intense moment where we would be shocked.  And although there were moments that were intense, I left feeling let down as the big climax was, well, anti-climactic.  The intensity and the sadness of the film never let up and then all of a sudden the film was over.  A little more resolution would have been nice although we are left with the knowledge that Cahill was starting to heal from his experiences—that was about as happy an ending as Sheridan was going to give us.

Brothers 3

The acting and plot of this film were well done, it was just a little too depressing, disturbing and unresolved for my liking.  I think the subject matter is a little touchy and still fresh and raw in America’s mind, so even though it’s a good story, it needed proper resolution to draw in a proper audience.

Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter joins Hungry Rabbit Jumps

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Jennifer Carpenter, best know for her role as Debra Morgan on Dexter, will join Nicolas Cage in the thriller HUNGRY RABBIT JUMPS.  It was reported here, that Guy Pearce joined the cast along with January Jones. The film follows Cage’s character as he joins a vigilante group after his wife (Jones) is assaulted. Carpenter will join the cast as the friend of January Jones’ character. Tobey Maguire is also on board as a producer.

Still not a lot of information on this film but it was supposed to start shooting before the end of this year.  Nicolas Cage is a busy guy, you can check out the trailers for his upcoming films THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE and SEASON OF THE WITCH.

Driver’s EDitorial #08: Bring on Spidey 4!

driver'sedheader

by: Brad Sturdivant

Our Driver’s EDitorial is a weekly column designed to express our opinion on something going on in Hollywood today. Sometimes we whine and complain about something we wish was different, other times we heap praise on the system for getting it right.

There’s a lot of negative buzz going around the web world regarding Sam Raimi’s upcoming SPIDER-MAN 4. I’ve read everything from “Raimi doesn’t have it anymore” to “Spider-man 3 killed the franchise”. It’s ridiculous how fair-weather fanboys are. If a couple of snobbish critics dislike a film, the fanboys jump on it and the next thing you know, SPIDER-MAN 3 is the worst movie ever made. That’s insane, as is the notion that Sam Raimi destroyed the franchise or that he can’t make another great Spider-man film.

Spidey 2

First, let’s get something out of the way; SPIDER-MAN 3 was not a bad film. Yes, it had its problems, but overall, it was a fun film. It was a good summer blockbuster and it still has the best action scenes in all of the Spidey films. I loved the opening fight between Peter and the New Goblin. It also had more action than the other films and was void of any slow spots that the other two suffered from. Despite its problems, SPIDER-MAN 3 was fun and far from the abomination that people are trying to make it out to be. If you buy into the hype that the studio forced Raimi to do some of the things he did, then you should have no fears about the fourth film.

Spider-Man 3

Raimi just needs to make the film he wants to make. He needs to ignore everyone around him (ie: the studio) that want him to make a movie to sell action figures and not a truly great film. He also needs to avoid trying to make a better film than the DARK KNIGHT. There’s no competition between the two franchises because both of them are different, with different tones and goals. Getting into a mindset where you have to beat something that you’re not competing with could mean disaster for an artist. Aside from Superman, Spider-man is one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. There are plenty of great stories to be told and all Raimi has to do is tell a great story, like he has done so many times in the past.

SPIDER-MAN 3

However, in telling the story, he needs to do something with Peter’s love interest. Early reports have Kirsten Dunst reprising her role as Mary Jane Watson and if there’s one area of the Spider-man franchise that really needs some work, it’s with her character. Bryce Dallas Howard was only in the third film for a little while, but I found her ten times more appealing than Dunst. If Raimi has to come to one glowing realization, it’s that Dunst is a huge negative for any film she’s in. I’d like to see the Gwen Stacy angle explored some more and maybe boot out Dunst.

Spidey 1

I know all the hype lately has surrounded the DARK KNIGHT, and that’s fine. But let’s not forget about our friendly neighborhood Spider-man. With a returning cast and a director that feels like he has something to prove, Spidey 4 should be a blast.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire Eying The Third Man Remake

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Posted by: Sturdy

It’s strictly rumor at this point, but it looks like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire could be remaking the classic Carol Reed film THE THIRD MAN.  Steven Knight (EASTERN PROMISES) is already working on the script.

Again, these things have to be taken with a grain of salt.  It could be announced tomorrow, or never even happen.  With no director or studio backing, anything can happen and production is still a long way off.  But when the bidding does start, it will be extremely expensive if DiCaprio and Maguire are, in fact, going to star.  Those two actors together is very believable given the fact they’re good friends and have yet to star together since reaching A-list status.  Check out the before and after pics below.
