Will Smith looking at The Legend of Cain with vampires

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

Will Smith has been an A-list star for many years now and is showing no signs of slowing down.  Which makes it odd to me that he’s even considering jumping on the current vampire fad.  I can’t imagine this vampire craze will last too much longer and by the time this movie is released, there’s a good chance audiences will be completely tired of them.  But nonetheless, Mr. Smith is looking to star as the legendary biblical character Cain in THE LEGEND OF CAIN.  What does that have to do with vampires?  Well, we don’t know exactly, but supposedly the story will feature a “vampire twist”.  The script was written by Caleeb Pinkett and Dan Knauf.

At first I thought that meant that Big Willy would be playing a vampire, but the story of Cain in the Bible is that he was the son of Adam and he committed the first murder by killing his brother (Abel).  But this doesn’t necessarily mean Smith is a bad guy, because maybe his brother was a vampire.  Who knows?  But it’s expected that this will be his follow-up project after he gets done with MEN IN BLACK 3.

Jemaine Clement joins Will Smith and Josh Brolin in Men In Black 3

Back in December, I read the news that there would be no third season of ‘Flight of the Conchords’ and I fell into a deep depression.  It was a sad time, but I’ve managed to pull myself together and move on with my life.  It seems that at least one-half of the fourth most popular folk band in New Zealand is doing the same thing as Jemaine Clement has signed on to be the bad guy in the upcoming MEN IN BLACK 3.  In it, he will play a villain named Boris who is described as charming and creepy.

Will Smith signed on a couple of weeks ago and Josh Brolin has come on board to play a young version of Tommy Lee Jones’s character from 1969.  It’s still unclear how much of a part anyone will have, but it looks like most of the cast is returning along with original director Barry Sonnenfeld.  Of course, it will all be in 3D.

Barry Sonnenfeld claims Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back for Men in Black 3D

In a recent interview, Barry Sonnenfeld let it slip that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are definitely coming back for MEN IN BLACK 3D.  We knew last year that another sequel was in the works, but this is the first we’ve heard that both stars are “officially” on board.  Sometimes, a director or producer will be in a casual conversation and will say something as fact that is actually far from fact.  I’m not saying that’s what happened here, I’m just saying that it has been known to happen.  Although I think we can bank on another MIB movie, I find it hard to believe that the two main stars have signed on to the sequel and Sonnenfeld “announce” it with such little fanfare.  That’s something that Sony would make a bigger deal out of.

So is this good news?  Personally, I thought the first one was overrated and the second was completely unnecessary.  That said, the movies have their audience and I’m sure with the involvement with Mr. Smith and Mr. Jones, it will be a huge success.

I know that you all have been waiting for this news (or maybe not) but Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the classic film BAD BOYS on June 1, 2010.  The Michael Bay classic, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, is about two cops in Miami who are on a case involving drugs.  This is exciting news as this was one of my personal favorite action flicks growing up.   Sadly no news is out about the release of BAD BOYS II as of now but stay tuned for further updates.  Not a lot of special features to announce on this film, but here they are:

  • Documentary: Putting the Boom and Bang in the Bad Boys
  • Commentary with Director Michael Bay
  • BD-Live: Movie IQ
  • 3 Music videos

He Said/She Said #19: The Legend of Bagger Vance

He Said/She Said is a bi-weekly column where a male and female reviewer from the site team up to debate the merits of a particular film.

HE SAID

I feel that THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE is one of the most misunderstood films of the 90’s.  Maybe it’s the star power of Will Smith, Matt Damon and Charlize Theron that threw people off.  I think people saw their names and naturally assumed that this was going to be a summer blockbuster with quick editing and maybe a couple of fistfights.  Instead, they got a deeply moving film about finding who you are and overcoming past mistakes to achieve success.  It’s a golf movie, but golf here is purely a metaphor for finding that balance in life that sets all of us straight.  It sounds corny, but the movie makes it work.

Matt Damon and Will Smith in The Legend of Bagger Vance

Matt Damon is Rannulph Junuh, a down and out former prodigal golfer that now spends his days drinking and gambling, but turns to golf to get his life back on track.  That’s the basic premise and what you’ll see on the back cover.  But the real story is Rannulph’s use of golf as a physical metaphor for reaching a turning point in your life when you stop feeling sorry for yourself and start living your life.  Will Smith is Bagger Vance, a mysterious caddy that helps him get his swing back.  But Bagger Vance is more of an “angel” that guides and inspires Rannulph on his journey.  The “swing” is just another way of saying “life”, “spirit”, “mojo” or whatever word you want to use to describe that inner quality we all have that inspire us to be successful or to live a good life.

With two talented actors turning in great performances, Robert Redford was left focusing on beautiful scenery and captivating art direction.  Even if you don’t buy into the deeper meaning (which I obviously did), the beautifully shot golf scenes and landscapes are worth the price of admission.  Many films are more than what they appear, such is the case with THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE.

SHE SAID

I couldn’t stomach THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE and I’m not completely sure why.  I like Damon, Smith, Theron and Redford but there was something about this film that just didn’t work.  Probably the fact that it was about golf and it ran over two hours- when there isn’t a lot of interesting stuff going on, two hours really seems like an eternity.

Matt Damon and Will Smith in The Legend of Bagger Vance

The scenery was the only redeeming quality of this film which really shouldn’t be the case with stars like Damon and Smith.  These characters felt shallow and unauthentic for the entire movie.  I love Will Smith but seeing him as a meek and mellow character is unacceptable, I would have had enjoyed the film more had the roles of Damon and Smith been reversed.  I expect this kind of character more from Damon than Smith.  I like Smith intense and full of emotion and a role like this just doesn’t work for him.  He has a lot of emotional range as an actor, but this isn’t the range of emotions moviegoers like to see from him. But even if you can buy Smith in this role, the film still feels awkward and pointless. There were times when it wanted to be more than a sports movie but it just didn’t know how to get there.
